HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS PROBLEM?

Previously, cases of gender based violence were perceived as domestic cases, however, today they are being seen as a violation of human rights and personal liberties that undermine the rule of good governance. There fore gender based violence is a serious offence punishable by imprisonment.

IN 1994, under the reform programme of the Zambia Police Service, the victim support Unit was created to deal with acts of violence against children, women and the elderly. The victim support unit enables the Police to help reduce trauma of victims of violence.

Most cases which were treated as civil cases are now reported to the Police. Some cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) have reduced due to sensitization.

IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC PROTOCOL TARGETS)

According to article 20 of the SADC Protocol Targets. It states that: By 2015, inact and enforce legislation prohibiting all forms of GBV. To ensure that perpetrators of GBV including domestic violence, rape, defilement and incest are tried by a court of competent jurisdiction.
