PERCEPTIONS OF LAWRENCE ART COMMUNITY UNITY

There is a disconnect between downtown local artists and KU students. Sometimes the two will come together in exhibitions in local galleries, but they are usually separate. There are factions as there are everywhere. Usually artist have different ideas about art and group somewhat by that. Definitely there are factions a lots of separate groups, individual galleries, university students, and local artists. There are different crowds that attend different events. I think there is a divide between the actual residents of Lawrence who are raising families or grew up here and all of the college students. Final Friday definitely unites the downtown area.

Art Student Focus Group Panel

WAYS TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY UNITY

1. More open calls, community shows, forums, artists groups. 2. By exhibiting together-- getting to know each other and their work. 3. Having more public collaborative events. Also events with a variety of activities would bring people together. 4. Invite everyone to the final presentation and have gatherings to initiate discussion and collaboration. 5. Art festivals that incorporate many different kinds of media, events, artists and performances could draw a more diverse crowd. 6. Bring in artist to give talks and demos is a good way to get local artists connected with each other, the community murals, and art projects. 7. Community activism for sure, plenty of college age people want to improve the area but dont always know how.
