Inventory or Stocks ?
Stock consists of all the goods and materials that are stored by an organisation. It is a store of item that is kept for future use. An Inventory is a list of the items held in stock.

Item or Unit ?
An item is a single type of product which is kept in stock: it is one entry in the inventory. A unit is the standard size or quantity of a stock item.

Stock Cycle
Stock Cycle is the sequence of Stock Replenishment and Reduction to meet demand, that is repeated continuously.

Inventory Management
Inventory Management is the function responsible for all decisions about stock in the organisation. It makes decisions for policies, activities, and procedures to make sure the right amount of each item is held in stock.

For giving a buffer or cushion between SUPPLY and DEMAND.

CMJ Constructors Ltd. Currently has sales of 20 million a year, with a stock level of 25% of sales. Annual holding cost for stock is 20% of the value. Operating costs are 15 million a year and other assets are valued at 30 million. What is the current return on assets? How does this change when stock levels are reduced to 20% of sales?

Pareto Analysis

(1) Calculate the estimated annual spend for each item. (2) Sort these annual spends in descending order. (3) Calculate the total annual spend for all items, calculate the % spend for each item and then the % cumulative annual spend. (4) Calculate the cumulative % for each item in descending order. In the example the item with the top annual spend represents 5% of the items, the second item 10% and so on. (5) Determine the split between A, B and C class items.
