Combining Literacies

Created by Alex Kneier Bradley Schneider Nick DeFrancisco

Literacy Sponsors: Intuitively, sponsors seemed a fitting term for the figures who turned up most typically in peoples memories of literacy learning: older relatives, teachers, priests, supervisors, military officers, editors, influential authors. (Deborah Brandt, 335 )

Combining Literacies

Like Legos, literacies can build off of one another; combing into completely unique forms. These literacies relate to one another and occur on a timeline from infancy to adulthood at various degrees of relevancy. When one or more literacy sponsors are taken away they can affect how a person learns, grows and thinks.

This timeline is a representation of Brad, Nick, and Alexs history with literacy sponsors and when the sponsors are evident.

In the next few slides we will be deconstructing the sponsors of literacy that were listed in the key (specific to the types of literacies they sponsor)

Parents & Family

In general, our parents, consciously or not, aid in the development of more basic literacies: language, communication, and later in our lives; morality. However, our families also introduce newer varying sponsors of literacy to us, which guides our development. Parents and Family are literacy sponsors who teach us throughout our whole lives. Infancy, Pre. Education, Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood. My parents often tell me stories of when I was a baby and how they would compete to get me to say momma or papa first. My mom ended up winning and my first word was momma. However it was my dad who introduced me to sports, and to this day I still play basketball.

Friends

Although the literacies our friends can introduce to are innumerable, generally any friend can expand on our literacies of morality, body language & tone, and companionship. Friends teach us these literacies; Morality, Behavior & expression, Communication, and Companionship from Pre. Education untill the rest of our lives.

Sports & extra-curricular

Aside from building on our base of friends, who can themselves sponsor literacies, sports & extra-curricular activities on their own can establish an understanding of team dynamics, and fine tune our evaluation of threats. I can relate to this, because of a personal example of joining the marching band in high school. While preparing for my first performance, my instructor really stressed just how important it was to listen to one another and feed off of one anothers energy while on the field, so that we can truly perform as one band together, which really helped to gain those team dynamic skills. Religion

Religion is a literacies that ties into every other literacy. For those who grew up as spiritual beings and learning about religion are affected for the rest of their lives. Religion is so strong it can save and some times take lives. A more specific morality Understanding specific rituals/traditions

Media

We learn many literacy skills through the media, it allows us to become aware of things around us and it provides the ability to stay connected with our community. Technology and Media in the modern world is nearly impossible to escape, because of this we learn from it all the time. It is evident in or learning from Pre. Education and onward. Media allows you to learn literacies from all over the world, it helps you become cultured due to the fact that it is so versatile. For example, when a major disaster occurs, news crews and camera men rush to the affected area and allow people to watch and understand what is happening. Provides you with a theory of your environment

Internet & Computer

Internet and the use of computers have many different ways in which we can learn to expand our knowledge of basic literacies, such as coding interface, internet navigation, software interface (media), symbol interpretation (language), and symbol presentation (communication). Many social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or even the good old Myspace have all taught me personally the literacy of symbol interpretation and presentation. The way that people go about communicating with one another through these sites is a literacy developed from the use of these computers and other sources of technology. Coding Interface Internet Navigation Software Interface Symbol interpretation. (language)* Symbol presentation. (communication.)*

School
School, out of them all, is probably the most common source for gaining knowledge of basic literacies. To narrow down, the most important literacies, one can truly achieve from school, would include, reading, writing (formatting), logic (mathematics), and theory of environment (past(history)). School, to me has always been looked upon as the main source of where I have obtained most of my knowledge. Through the processes of learning how to read, how to write, mathematics, and history or theory of environment, I have personally grown a lot academically, and have learned so much from this literacy sponsor. Reading Writing (Formatting) Logic (mathematics) Theory of environment. (past [history])

Work

Throughout the course of work, one gains knowledge in basic literacies such as role evaluation, communication with others in a work setting, and body language. These literacies dont play affect into our timeline until the adolescent or adulthood stages of our lives though. I know personally, that work can be a very important literacy to have, while entering into adulthood, because it allows us to have certain attributes or skills, such as leadership and responsibility, which we will need for the rest of our lives. Conclusion

Overall, a lot of these literacy sponsors such as parents, school, and work, to name a few, play a part at different stages of our lives. However, depending on which stage it is occurring in, it can change the effect it truly has on gaining knowledge from that particular literacy. For example, parents at the infancy or pre-ed stages are vital literacies that one needs in their life, whereas towards adolescence and adulthood, they are not that important of a literacy sponsor. This change in literacy is important for one to gain knowledge throughout the course of their life, and by eliminating one of these literacy sponsors, it will have a lasting effect on the individual.
