INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING (MEC400)

TASK : DESIGNING A HYBRID VEHICLES

Muhammad Arif Bin Khalid Muhaimin Bin Berhan Afizu Bin Aznan Nur Al-Hafiz Bin Zulkifli

INTRODUCTION
y

For the MEC 400 , we had been given a task on designing a new engineering product. We had given three options of tasks to choose from, and our group had decided to choose the task on Designing A Hybrid Vehicle. A hybrid vehicle , is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to move the vehicle. The term most commonly refers to hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Which combine an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors.

Defining the Problem

y

There are many problems that had been identified. The main problem would be regarding the environmental issue. An example of environmental problem would be the rate of emission of carbon dioxide. Fuel consumption is another factor. The normal internal combustion vehicle would consume a lot of fuel. In addition to that problem is the increasing of the current fuel price market. Based on the above problems we found that a hybrid vehicle is the best alternative way in order to overcome the problems.

The design of the car

TECHNOLOGY Power-Split Series-Parallel Hybrid y A power-split hybrid electric drive train has two motors : an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The power from these two motors can be shared to drive the wheels via a power-splitter, which is a simple planetary gear set.
y

The ratio can be from 0-100% for the combustion engine, or 0-100% for the electric motor electric motor, or an anything in between, such as, 40%-60% for the electric motor and combustion engine respectively. The electric motor can act as a generator charging the batteries. On the open road, the primary power source is the internal combustion engine, when maximum power is required, for example to overtake, the electric motors are used to assist maximizing the available power for a short period, giving the effect of having a larger engine than actually installed. In most applications, the engine is switched off when the car is stationary reducing curbside emissions.

BODY PARTS DESIGN AND MATERIALS y Aerodynamic : y the shape of the body should be streamlined shape. y Streamlined shape has lower drag coefficient.

is the drag coefficient is the drag force (the drag component in the direction of flow velocity). y is the mass density. y is the speed. y is the reference area (the frontal area of the vehicle).

The two principal crops are kenaf (a member of the hibiscus family and related to cotton) and one of the strongest natural fibres, similar to flax in absorbency and density.

The constraints of manufacturing hybrid car

y

the batteries of hybrid cars will be both expensive to replace and will also be difficult to safely recycle. There is an impending increase in the costs of many rare materials used in the manufacture of hybrid cars.

The benefits of using a hybrid car

y

Hybrid Vehicle emissions today are getting close to or even lower than the recommended level set by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). The recommended levels they suggest for a typical passenger vehicle should be equated to 5.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The hybrid vehicle typically achieves greater fuel economy and lower emissions than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), resulting in fewer emissions being generated Noise emissions are reduced, particularly at idling and low operating speeds, in comparison to conventional engine vehicles.
