SUSTAINABLE GROUND WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Central Ground Water Board, FARIDABAD

WATER AVAILABILITY
Utilizable Provision for Domestic/ Industries Available for Irrigation Utilization from Ground Water (1997-98) Projected Demand by 2050 Total Runoff Utilizable Runoff 396 cubic km 71 cubic km 325 cubic km 230 cubic km 332-427 cubic km 1953 cubic km 1086 cubic km

Haryana

Major Issues
Depleting ground water levels Deteriorating ground water quality Reduction in Ground Water resources for Domestic and industrial purposes Drying up of lakes / water Bodies in and around Faridabad

Alluvium increases in thickness from 25m to 150m gradually from North West to East. Maximum thickness of alluvium is in central and western parts which decrease gradually towards northwest and south east

Ground Water Levels - May 1990 Vs 2010

SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES
Understanding of Aquifer Systems Aquifer Systems Participatory ground Water Management Rain Water Harvesting & Artificial Recharge to Ground Water

Participatory ground Water Management

The objective is to equip groundwater farmer/ users /stakeholders with the necessary data, skills and knowledge to manage groundwater resources available to them in a sustainable manner, mainly through managing and monitoring their own demand. The assumption is that access to scientific data and knowledge will enable farmers to make appropriate choices and decisions regarding the use of groundwater resources and agricultural practices.

Aquifer Mapping
CGWB in process for Preparation of Aquifer Maps for all the States of the country at 1:250,000. During XII Plan - Aquifer mapping at 1:50,000 Aquifer as a unit for Planning & Management of Ground Water Resources.

Artificial Recharge Techniques

Surface Spreading
Basin Flooding & Recharge Basins Contour Bunds and contour trenches Gabion, Nala Bunds, Check Dams Percolation from lake water bodies & Ponds Stream Modification / Augmentation
Direct methods

Sub-surface Techniques
Recharge wells & Trenches Gravity head recharge wells

Way Forward
Understanding of aquifer systems Arresting declining Ground Water Levels. Awareness generation for understanding the ground water occurrence and recharge concepts. Ground water management measures such as recharge , conservation and recycle / reuse of ground water. Specific recharge plans for urban and rural areas Ground Water Regulation self regulation Adoption of Participatory ground water management approach.
