Rugby

Netball

STRUCTURE NATIONAL
Similarities

Differences

The RFU & England Netball both have a well organised national structure which overseas all aspects. Both National governing bodies have senior managements this meaning that different employees work in different sections.

The person in charge of RFU makes the rules and everyone who participation obeys them. (Top to bottom) England Netball the players decide what they want changed in the sport and the chief of netball makes it

happen (Bottom to top)

The RFU covers more aspects in their national structure compared to England Netball. This is because the RFU have more executives in the sport; more ideas get put across.

STRUCTURE REGIONAL
Similarities

Differences

After researching this section I was unable to display any results.

2,549,196 RFU registered players 77,931 England Netball registered players 2,099 Rugby clubs 3,154 Netball Clubs As you can see from the stats above the RFU have more people participating in their sports than netball. This is because rugby is a common sports around the nation, more people acknowledge rugby when its shown on TV or in newspapers. Rugby may have more people participating in the sport but netball seem to have more clubs located around the nation than rugby. This is probably the case because netball teams appear to be smaller, so they have produced more clubs so everyone who is interested in the sport can play it for a local team. Rugby will have less clubs as the squads have bigger numbers compared to netball.

STRUCTURE LOCAL
Similarities

After researching this section in depth I cannot display and relevant results.

In Avon the sport netball is being played at 51 clubs. There are roughly 2,500 players about 104 of them are senior, plus there are 43 junior teams. Compared to rugby these stats are nothing, the RFU receive more money income which can lead onto putting more money into local clubs which will attract more people to the sport. Rugby have more participation in there sport because children and middle aged adults have the facilities and equipment there for them. This can help them to move up In the development stage in the sport.

WHOLE SPORT PLAN

Similarities

Differences
y

The RFU & England Netball have created a document which is viewable to the public. It shows their whole sport plan.

Increase participation of netball in school and communitys aged from you teenagers to 60 year old women. Present the sport more around the nation and worldwide ( currently being played in countries never to be though off) The RFU have produced a very well structured document viewable to the public, showing their whole sport plans; they have set targets they want to achieve in a couple years time. These targets can range from increasing investment or see an increase in rugby participation. This document is viewable to everyone in then public.

General Notes

RULE MAKING
Similarities

Differences

When the RFU and England Netball have produced new rules for the sports they form a document. This is available to the public. The document will explain the new rule in depth. It will include a brief outline of the new rule plus the sanctions if it is obeyed in a inappropriate way. The RFU and England Netball rule making documents are easily accessible to the public.

The RFU produce different rule making documents for different age groups as different age groups have to consider health and safety when playing. So if you are younger the game is going to contain less contact, but when you gradually get older the game gets more physical and intense and the rules change. The RFU would have created more rules for the sport. This is because there are many health and safety measures they would have to take into account as young children would be participating in the sport (it cannot be to dangerous) so the rules will have to be suitable for young children.

General Notes

TECHNICAL
Similarities

Differences

Both sports have contracts with TV company Sky Sports. Allowing them to show live games on TV Nationally and locally.

Rugby is has much more partners in TV broadcasting than netball. For example rugby is broadcasted live on range on channels from BBC, ITV, ESPN and Sky Sports. But netball have just recently signed a deal with sky sports which is allowing them to have live netball game broadcasted around the nation. This may boost the knowledge of netball to the public, it might even boost the participation in the sport itself.

General Notes

MERCHANDISING
Similarities

Differences

Rugby and Netball have a variety of merchandising company's who produce products for the sport.

In the rugby industry there are a range of merchandisers that are willing to support the sport, whereas netball doesnt have as many merchandising companies to help them supporting the sport. The reason why rugby has more merchandising products is because the sport is more popular and company's are willing to make products for that sport, because then the merchandising company's logo will be plastered everywhere where thats sports is being played e.g. on the kit, boards and equipment. There is a larger range of rugby products than netball products. I would be very easy to find rugby clothing in shops but it would be a struggle to find netball clothing you may only find the shoes and sports balls.

COMPETITIONS AND TOURNAMENTS

Similarities

Differences
y

Rugby & netball both manage their competitions and tournaments in a well structured way. All events run smoothly and according to plan, no faults hardly occur. You can easily spot different ability levels in different competitions/tournaments.

The RFU has produced a series of competitions and tournaments. Such as, the Aviva Premiership, Heineken Cup, Championship, National League 1 and National league 2. England Netball haven't created so many as the sport is not that popular comparing to rugby. Here are some of the Netball Competitions, the National premiership , Regional, Local and Curriculum. The Netball structure their competitions/tournaments are managed in a different way to the rugby. In netball if your In the league you do not get regulated or promoted you stay put in the league, so every year you would have to try and win that league. On the other hand in rugby, there are certain types of leagues where you get promoted or regulated, this meaning moving up or down in the structure, obviously the elite athletes are going to be at the top and the amateur athletes will be at the bottom. In rugby they have more people participating than netball so that means more competitions and tournaments can be made, and more and more athletes can be part of these types of events.

General Notes

TRAINING OF OFFICIALS
Similarities

Differences

The RFU and England Netball both have produced well presented pathways for becoming and elite official. In both sports you have to pay to take the courses. In rugby and netball you have to have certain official awards in order to move up to the next stage.

Top trained officials in netball such as umpiring do not get paid even at a high level. But in rugby they do as they receive larger money income which can go towards officials wages. The elite athletes in netball still do not get paid they all have other jobs and have to participate in netball in their free time. But countries like New Zealand and Australia pay their elite players, so they can make a living out of the sport. Rugby pay all their top elite players not matter what, some players for example in national league 2 receive a small amount of money for signing onto a club but thats about it. If you would like to become a official in netball you would have to perform as one in you free time. Mostly all officials in netball have other jobs to attend. So you are basically volunteering to be an official.
