OVERVIEW
What is Skin Technology ? Objectives Men behind skin technology How it works ? Sensor Working Design Issues Advantages Applications Limitations Conclusion
OBJECTIVES
To make an electronic device which can follow the skin morphology and still adhere like a temporary tattoo To make the thickness and stiffness of the electronic system similar to that of skin Resist the natural vigor of twists, turns and stretches
HOW IT WORKS
Uses high-performance epidermal electronic system Easy to use, flexible and gives the comfort of a temporary tattoo The electronic patches bend, stretch, and deform with the same mechanical properties of skin Works through an electrostatic phenomenon called the Van Der Waals force
SENSOR WORKING
Van Der Waals force - causes molecules and surfaces to stick together without interfering with motion Like a temporary tattoo, water-soluble sheet of plastic is attached to the body The sensor mounts on it which is brushed with water
sensors, light-emitting tiny transmitters and receivers and networks of carefully crafted wire filaments
DESIGN ISSUES
It is small and nearly weightless Less than 50 micrometers i.e. thick - less than the diameter of a human hair There are also tiny solar cells which can generate power or get energy from electromagnetic radiation
ADVANTAGES
Can be sticked with ease Tape or glue is not necessary Easy to remove Free of cumbersome wires
Easy to Apply
Easy to remove
APPLICATIONS
chemical and biological sensing sub-vocal communication capability wound treatment computer gaming
LIMITATIONS
Skin constantly produces new cells, the surface cells die and are brushed off, so a new sensor would need to be attached at least every fortnight.
CONCLUSION
With advancements in technology over time and the combination of various fields of research like chemical and medical with electro sciences, this technology is expected to play a crucial role in presenting a better sophistication to human race.
