HISTORY
In 1990 Tim-Berners Lee created the first World Wide Web server and browser. It opened for commercial use in 1991 . In 1994 other advances took place, such as online banking and the opening of an online pizza shop by Pizza Hut During that same year, Netscape introduced SSL encryption of data transferred online, which has become essential for secure online shopping. Also in 1994 the German company Intershopp introduced its first online shopping system. In 1995 Amazon launched its online shopping site, and in 1996 eBay appeared.

using the Internet and allow customers to buy the items and articles of their desire from the store. The information pertaining to the products are stores on an RDBMS at the server side (store). The Server process the customers and the items are shipped to the address submitted by them. The application was designed into two modules:Os for the customers who wish to buy the articles, for the storekeepers who maintains and updates the information pertaining to the articles and those of the customers. The end user of this product is a departmental store where the application is hosted on the web and the administrator maintains the database. The application which is deployed at the customer database, the details of the items are brought forward from the database for the customer view based on the selection through the menu and the database of all the products are updated at the end of each transaction. Data entry into the application can be done through various screens designed for various levels of users.

WHAT IS ONLINE SHOPPING??

Online shopping is the process whereby consumers directly buy goods or services from a seller in real-time, without an intermediary service, over the Internet. It is a form of electronic commerce. An online shop, eshop, e-store, Internet shop, webshop, webstore, online store, or virtual store evokes the physical analogy of buying products or services at a bricks-andmortar retailer or in a shoppig centre. The process is called business-toconsumer (B2C) online shopping. When a business buys from another business it is called business-to-business (B2B) online shopping.

WHY ONLINE SHOPPING??

Consumers buy a variety of items from online stores. In fact, people can purchase just about anything from companies that provide their products online. Books, clothing, household appliances, toys, hardware, software, and health insurance are just some of the hundreds of products consumers can buy from an online store. y Many people choose to conduct shopping online because of the convenience. For example, when a person shops at a brick-and-mortar store, she has to drive to the store, find a parking place, and walk throughout the store until she locates the products she needs. After finding the items she wants to purchase, she may often need to stand in long lines at the cash register.

GOALS FOR THE SYSTEM AND THE PROJECT

The primary features of the project entitled "ONLINE SHOPPING" are high accuracy, design flexibility and easy availability. And also it uses database tables representing entities and relationships between entities. The system is capable of maintaining details of various customers, vendors, Products and storing all the day to day transactions such as generation of shipment address bills, handling customers and product receipts, updating of stores

WHAT A CUSTOMER DO..

In this software the customer has to first register himself/herself.Then he/she can login as a normal user. After login the customer is redirected to the home page and then to the product category page where he/she can browse through different products and add them to his/her shopping cart.

SYSTEM SPECIFICATION
The application ONLINE SHOPPING was designed into two modules

For the customers who wish to buy the articles.

For the storekeeper who maintains and updates the information pertaining to the articles and those of the customers.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

y HARDWARE: PENTIUM SERVER with Network of 586 Dx4 y 300 MHz, 8.3 GB HDD, 64MB RAM. y SOFTWARE: JDK 1.2.2 (onwards), JAVASERVER 1.1.3 (onwards) ,

SQL SERVER , JDBC-ODBC CONNECTIONS, MICROSOFT OFFICE ACCESS 07. y OPERATING SYSTEM: WINDOWS NT (onwards).

SYSTEM DESIGN
DATA DESIGN: The primary activity during data design is to select logical representations of data objects identified during requirement analysis and software analysis. A data dictionary explicitly represents the relationships among data objects and the constrains on the elements of the data structure

IMPLEMENTATION
Implementation is the stage where the theoretical design is turned into a working system. The most crucial stage in achieving a new successful system and in giving confidence on the new system for the users that it will work efficiently and effectively. The system can be implemented only after thorough testing is done and if it is found to work according to the specification.

CONCEPT AND TECHNIQUE

y In ONLINE SHOPING program we import many packages, use java

servlets and establish a JDBC:ODBC connection and create database using Microsoft office access. We also create different DHTML pages such as login page, registration pages etc. y The Java Packages:
y

The Java I/O Package (java.io) provides a set of input and Output streams used to read and write data to files or other Input and output sources. The java.sql provides a compatibility interface for accessing SQLbased databases. The javax.servlet package contains a number of classes and interfaces that describe and define the contracts between a servlet class and the runtime environment provided for an instance of such a class by a conforming servlet container. The javax.servlet.http provides an abstract class to be subclassed to create an HTTP servlet suitable for a Web site.

ADVANTAGES

It simplifies the operation. It avoids a lot of manual work. Every Transaction is obtained and processed immediately. Avoids errors by avoiding the manual work. User friendly screen to enter the data and Enquire the database tables. Online help messages available to the operating system. User can easily access the system without much experience. Provide Hardware and software securities. Portable and flexible for further extension.

CONCLUSION
The central concept of the application is to allow the customer to shop virtually using the Internet and allow customers to buy the items and articles of their desire from the store. The information pertaining to the products are stores on an RDBMS at the server side (store). The Server process the customers and the items are shipped to the address submitted by them. The application was designed into two modules first for the customers who wish to buy the articles. Second is for the storekeepers who maintains and updates the information pertaining to the articles. The end user of this product is a departmental store where the application is hosted on the web and the administrator maintains the database.

FUTURE SCOPE
The site is made in all possible way to meet the user requirements using latest version of available software and hardware. But as user requirements and operating environment keep changing further extensions can be made on this. But its present features can be enhanced by some simple modification in the codes so as to reuse it in the changing scenario. y Also various options can be added to the billing feature such as billing to mobile phones and landlines, cash on delivery option, cheque, gift cards, shipping system etc. y Not many products has been added in this project as it is a demo software. But numerous number of product can be added easily to this system by some simple modification of the system and including some files.
