In Depth – v2

“until the day when he was taken up, after he had

given commands through the Holy Spirit to the
apostles whom he had chosen.”

¬ Upon his departure, Jesus immediately provides for the

government of His church through the Holy Spirit
¬ Luke stresses that Jesus chose his disciples (here,
apostles), not the other way around as per the prevailing
rabbinic model of the time
‫ﮧ‬ God chose us in much the same way!
‫ﮧ‬ Go make disciples
In Depth – v6

"...but wait for the gift my Father promised, which

you have heard me speak about. For John baptized
with water, but in a few days you will be baptized
with the Holy Spirit.“

Did they understand

what he was saying?

What the Disciples Knew
¬ At the creation of the Earth (Gen 1:2) *
¬ With:
‫ﮧ‬ Joseph - as recognized by Pharaoh (Gen. 41:38-39)
‫ﮧ‬ Moses and 70 of the Israeli elders (Nms. 11:16-17) *
‫ﮧ‬ Joshua (Nms. 27:18)
‫ﮧ‬ David (1 Sam. 16:13)
‫ﮧ‬ Daniel - as recognized by Nebuchadnezzar
(Dan 4:8-9) *
¬ Judges
‫ﮧ‬ Othniel (Judges 3:7-11) – God delivers the Israelites from the king of Aram
‫ﮧ‬ Gideon (Judges 6:34) - God defeats the Midianites
‫ﮧ‬ Jephthah (Judges 11:29) – God gives the Ammonites a whuppin’
‫ﮧ‬ Samson (Judges 13:24-25, 15:14) – God whups the Phillistines
¬ Kings

¬ Prophets
‫ﮧ‬ “By your spirit…through your prophets” (Nehemiah 9:30)
Their very next question…

“So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord,

are you at this time going to restore the kingdom
to Israel?“”

¬ Are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost equal?

‫ ﮧ‬Are they separate (distinct)?

¬ Was the Holy Spirit different in the Jewish (or
“Old”) Testaments than during the New
‫ ﮧ‬If so, how?
¬ What is the gift of speaking in tongues? Is it for
¬ Do you receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism?
Before? (Acts 19:1-7)
‫ ﮧ‬Does it matter?
In Depth – v23-26

“Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart.

Show us which of these two you have chosen to
take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left
to go where he belongs." Then they cast lots, and
the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the
eleven apostles.”
Providence or Luck?

¬ For the Israelites, casting lots was sanctioned by God

‫ﮧ‬ Joshua divides land after casting lots in the presence of God
(Joshua 18:6-10)
‫ﮧ‬ The divisions of priests (1 Chronicles 24)
‫ﮧ‬ Temple functions - "Young and old alike, teacher as well as
student, cast lots for their duties" (1 Chronicles 25)
¬ Also Superstition
‫ﮧ‬ Sailors on Jonah’s ship (Jonah 1:7)
‫ﮧ‬ Roman soldiers for the Jesus’ clothes
(Matthew 27:35)

¬ Do you believe in Luck?

‫ﮧ‬ Good luck!
‫ﮧ‬ Best of luck!

¬ Read Luke
‫ ﮧ‬24 Chapters
‫ ﮧ‬30 minutes a day
¬ Read Acts 1 & 2
Numbers 6:24-26

' "The LORD bless you

and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you
and give you peace." '
