ISTALIF
The Afghan village of Istalif produces pottery with methods virtually unchanged for over a thousand years. No modern technology is used as clay is collected locally and thrown on a wheel spun by hand before drying in its natural state and glazed. Istalif pottery includes vases, flower pots, candlestick holders, ewers, plates, fish designs and other animal figures. Most of these unique pieces boast dazzling glazes ranging through turquoise and green. The Jindhag Foundation supports and preserves the cultural diversity of traditional and indigenous people around the world.

The masterpiece is dedicated to the mans defence lawyer Gareth Peirce.

Buddha
My time on Penang will be a highlight of this trip. Tuesday, June 21, began with a leisurely breakfast at Hutton Lodge, where I spent time talking to one of the workers who was a Christian. He spoke about how Christians had to be careful in how they talk about Jesus Christ to Muslims in order to avoid being prosecuted for evangelism. It is against a law for a Muslim to convert or for a Christian (or Hindu or Buddhist for that matter) to encourage a Muslim to convert.

Baluchi
A Baluchi rug from Nimruz Province, Afghanistan But the longer I stayed, the less consistent the answers became. Yesterdays Aimaq could be todays Taimani. I mention all this as a way of explaining how very difficult it is to get a clear understanding of rug weaving in Afghanistan. There are still plenty of real Turkoman and Baluch to talk to and real work to be done, perhaps by Western women with language skills. Weaving is part of the womens world and men will always be outsiders.

Afghan Carpet
Afghan carpet weaving traditions have a long history, its roots are lost in the distant past. The art of Afghan carpet passed down from generation to generation. And the rugs, and similar products were woven for home use only, and young girls learn the art of carpet weaving in his parents house while working on her dowry. Dowry consisted of carpets, blankets, pillows, curtains, etc.

An every man for himself venture, Buzkashi has recently become one of the few avenues for rural Afghan's to move up in the world, with warlords sponsoring teams and paying the best players comparatively lavish salaries, and offering cars, and cash bonus' as incentives.
