C.J.

Albert, the head of family-owned Armor Coat Insurance, receives an unsettling phone call from his star salesman. Fifty-two-year-old Ed McGlynn has just returned from a business dinner with his younger technology mentor, and he's none too happy with the way he's being treated. If C.J. doesn't take this attack dog off him, Ed warns, he's gone. C.J. had indeed assigned 28-year-old Roger Sterling--the company's monomaniacal, slightly antisocial director of e-commerce-to teach Ed about digital strategy and the Web. Reverse mentoring seemed like a good way to create synergy between the sales and technology groups. The goal was to create a digital insurance product that would allow Armor Coat to keep up with its competitors. But there'd been tension between Ed and Roger right from the start-stemming from their personalities and their two departments. So when the two reluctantly agreed to meet for dinner to talk, the conversation didn't go well. C.J. faces some difficult discussions with both disgruntled parties.

CJ was CEO of Armor Coat Insurance. Ed McGlynn, the company's star salesman, aged 52 yrs. Roger Sterling, the 28-year-old Web guru was hired last year to be the director of electronic commerce at Armor Coat. Roger was also called as Pac Man because he hides his emotions very well. According to Ed , Internet guys don't speak the same language as all other employees in the organization. They're arrogant. They lack respect. They don't have the same values There'd been tension between the company's salespeople and Roger's department right from the start.

But Armor Coat had to move into the Web era or it would die. They also complaint Internet experts being "overpaid C.J. fired 10% of the sales force to cut costs, The salespeople blamed the Web designers for this. Armor Coat's HR department earlier in the year had initiated a reverse mentoring program. Roger and Ed agrees to meet at Dinner to try patch things up Even this meeting didnt work out. Roger called CJ n said, Either Ed McGlynn leaves the team, or I do. That's your decision. CJ to Karen (wife)- "I don't need a generation gap at Armor Coat. I need these guys to connect. Otherwise, we won't be here in five years."

ED:
According to him, roger and his internet guys are rude, arrogant and they lack respect for their seniors. He wants to get rid of these internet guys and his mentor or he talks of leaving the organization.

ROGER:
He is tech savvy and according to him he is not in the office to solve the issues with senior sales people, he thinks they are nothing but insecure.

C.Js major issue:

1.There is a huge generation gap between both of them. 2. He cant afford to loose anyone of them, Ed is a star salesman and Roger has the capability of providing company what is the need of the hour. 3. Both of them dont like each other and does not want to work together.

There is a Model Of Communication called ABC model of communication. The solution of this case study leis in this model. ABC model has changed with the time: OLD: A- Accuracy, B- Brevity, C- Clarity Accuracy: the quality of being near to the true value Brevity: Shortness of duration; briefness of time; as, the brevity of human life. Clarity: free from obscurity and easy to understand

NEW: A-Affect, B- Behavior, C- Cognition Affect: To have an influence on or effect a change in, ex: Inflation affects the buying power of the dollar Behavior: The manner in which one behaves. The actions or reactions of a person or animal in response to external or internal stimuli. Cognition: Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension, including thinking, knowing, remembering, judging and problem-solving.

The basic problem is the generation gap between the two. CJ first of all needs to calm down both of them and then hold a meeting with both the teams in which EDs team should be told about the importance of changing time with the changing time changing trends being followed by explaining them the new ABC model which says that for a better results and communication one needs to be Affective, positive behavior with the zest of learning something new every time (cognition).

Now the new generation (Rogers team) should be told about the importance of the old way to succeed and better communication. They should be told the importance of Accuracy which computer might bring all the time also they need to be told about brevity and clarity in order to
