Setting
Cheshire Academy, Cheshire, Connecticut. A private day and boarding school with 360+ high school students. Receives international students from: Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Romania, Taiwan. There is an intensive ESL program with around 30+ students who prepare for the TOEFL and US higher education. This imagined course, is designed for advanced ESL students who have chosen not to matriculate into NE English classes. This course will focus on reading and writing for academic purposes but content will focus on the idea of identity in education, coming of age and other philosophical questions through literature. I will invite NE speakers to join the class to promote intercultural collaboration, and provide NE students an opportunity to focus on grammar in writing (especially for their Senior projects 3 books, three cumulative essays).
Sentences
Clauses
A clause is a group of related words containing a subject and a verb. Clauses help us to link important ideas together within sentences. Knowing how to use clauses can help us make sentences flow and express our ideas more clearly in writing.

We will review: Types of Clauses: Independent and dependent clauses Sentence connectors: Simple, compound and complex sentences Clause Connectors: Subordinators, Coordinators, Conjunctive.
Clauses
Independent: Can be its own sentence
Ex. Students usually spend four years in high school.
Compound two or more independent clauses together and both are equally important.
1) 2) 3) With a connector: I love pizza but I hate salad. With a semicolon: I love pizza; I hate salad. With a conjunctive adverb: I love pizza; however, I hate salad.
Complex - Has one independent clause and one dependent clause. Usually the independent clause is more important than the dependent clause.
Ex. Although we could not get a cab, we got to the party on time.

Activity
We are going to choose a poem from the Prophet and do a puzzle after we read the poem. Be on the lookout for sentence connectors. We will then analyze simple, compound and complex sentences. Literary questions: Who does the speaker remind you of? What is the speakers main point? What are some of the allusions that like or dislike?

For the next class, you will be asked to write: 3 Simple sentences 3 compound sentences 3 complex sentences 1 compound complex sentence You should then underline the independent clause, bold the dependent clause and italicize the sentences. This week, we are going to write a two page essay on a book (poetry or prose) that changed their lives. Explain:
Why this book is important to you? What did you gained from reading it? Choose a quote from the book and explain why it is important to you? Recommend a book that is similar for people who want to read more. We will peer edit in class on Friday. The second draft to be submitted to me on Monday.
