Traffic increases while

revenue-per-volume decreases
Traffic growth
• Operators differentiate
by innovative service offers,
flexibility and QoS

• Network operators provide new

services (eg multimedia, VoIP,
2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 HSPA etc.) to win customers
IP Services (without VoIP) and increase their revenue
Total voice traffic (with VoIP)

• New services increase bandwidth

Revenue/MB demand in all network layers –
including the transport layer

• As services become more

common, main differentiator
will be price: revenue per volume
2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010
will decline

Win new customers with new services supported
by a reliable infrastructure
Quality of Service:
• Reliable infrastructure
• Appropriate QoS for every use case
Flexibility:
• Fast response to new demands
• Automated service provisioning
Scalability:
• Invest according to capacity growth
• Use case driven investments
Cost-efficiency:
• Using the same infrastructure for all services
• Re-use of installed infrastructure

Enhanced multi-service provisioning by proposed
Next Generation Metro
Proposed tailored transport solutions allow investments in end
customer services:
• No additional investments in network equipment due to re-use of
installed infrastructure
• CAPEX for solutions based on proposed NG Metro up to 50% less
compared to other technologies (eg carrier-grade Ethernet)
• Proposed ASON/GMPLS in meshed networks offer substantial benefits
to customers: CAPEX savings of up to 30% compared to a similar feature
set in a ring topology

OPEX reductions by running all services over one converged network:

• End-to-end management in optical transport layer by proposed TNMS:
– Ability to integrate multi-vendor scenarios
– Standard open interfaces (eg SNMP, TMF CORBA, XML etc.) allow
easy integration into umbrella and operational support systems
• Triple/quadruple play enabled (voice, data, streaming, wireless)
