Research Topic
Managing Greenhouse Effect Through Site Repair and Proper Design Using Bioclimatic Strategies Towards Sustainable Development for South Sumatra Region

Problem Background
Indonesia has been identified as one of the countries in Asia most vulnerable to climate change hazards. Drought, floods, sea-level rise, and landslides are among the hazards that will affect mainly poor communities living on the lowland areas. In addition to being strongly affected by climate change, Indonesia is also one of the worlds largest emitters of Green House Gasses, thus contributing significantly to climate change. Indonesias largest emissions originate from deforestation and land degradation and conversion. In addition to causing climate change, these practices threaten livelihoods, biodiversity, peace and stability.

Problem Statement
Inefficient building design worsens global warming, causing 40 percent of the climate crisis. With climate change, there is demand for solutions that are climate responsive and climate adaptive. The quality of urban environment declining: Urban flooding, high temperatures and poor air quality.

Significance of The Problem

Buildings are intensive energy consumers, thus contribute significantly to the greenhouse effect and climatic change, and have a severe overall environmental impact. We should not forget that energy consumption causes environmental degradation. In contrast, bioclimatic, energy efficient buildings improve the quality of life for their users.

Purpose of The Study

To find sustainable building solutions. To reduce energy consumption. To return the environment altered by contaminants to its original condition. To study of recuperating degraded, damaged or destroyed ecosystems through active human intervention in development.

Philosophy

Ecological design, is bioclimatic design, design with the climate of the locality, and low energy design. (Ken Yeang, 2006)

Objective
The primary objective of this study was to examine the potential for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through improvement of the microclimate around buildings, through the bioclimatic design of exterior spaces and in general, of the built environment, adhering to sustainable development principles.

Research Questions
How do buildings affect natural resources, and how does it effect our environment and climate change? How can I incorporate bioclimatic architecture concepts into development in lowland urban areas? How much changes/repair must be made to sites in order to become sustainable?

Theoretical Framework
Some of the concepts of Bioclimatic Designs are, Site and climatic analysis, design strategies that reduce or eliminate the need for nonrenewable energy resources and how these strategies specifically affected placement, orientation, and shading of the building.

Hypotheses

Using bioclimatic strategies as design tool will contribute in reducing energy consumption and therefore can decrease greenhouse effect.
