Introduction
What is Transaction? What is Processing? What is a Transaction Processing System?

Evolution Of TPS

Transactions were punched into punch cards

Until 1970s

Online processing

Terminologies
Transaction Processing Systems are cross-functional information systems that process data resulting from the occurrence of business transactions.

Architecture of TPS

Transaction Processing System Data

Qualifiers
In order to qualify as TPS, transactions made by the system must pass the ACID test.

1. Atomicity

2. Consistency
3. Isolation 4. Durability

Types Of TPS
Batch Processing

Systems:
A system whereby business transactions are accumulated over a period of time and prepared for processing as a single unit or batch. Example: Paying by Cheque, Credit card transactions, payroll etc.

On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP):

A system whereby each transaction is processed immediately, without the delay of accumulating transactions into a batch. Example: ATM, Airline reservation system, online purchases, etc.

FEATURES OF TPS
RAPID RESPONSE RELIABILITY INFLEXIBILITY CONTROLLED PROCESSING

Advantages of TPS
GREATER RELIABILITY INCREASED STORAGE CAPACITY

LESS PROCESSING TIME

MORE EFFICIENT INCREASED CUSTOMER SERVICE

Disadvantages of TPS
Security and Reliability : Online transaction systems are generally
more susceptible to direct attack and abuse than their offline counterparts.

Network Failures : When organizations choose to rely on OLTP,

operations can be severely impacted if the transaction system or database is unavailable due to data corruption, systems failure, or network availability issues.

In batch processing information is delayed

Too costly : some systems require offline maintenance which further affects the cost-benefit analysis.

Data Validation
Data validation is used to check the entry of transaction data. It involves : Transaction initiation and Field checking
Data validation in real time system allows corrections to be

made as the data is entered .

Office Automation Systems

Meaning:
Adoption of IT tools for enhancing productivity and reduction of manual labour.
It is associated with paperless office. Computer system, such as word processing, electronic mail system, and scheduling system, that is designed to increase the productivity of data workers in the office.

Objectives
To improve customer relation by bringing transparency in systems. To achieve better management control To simplify operations and minimize computational errors To improve quality of output in terms of presentation and reduction in processing time.

Tools of OAS
1) Electronic publishing 2) Electronic communication 3) Electronic collaboration 4) Image processing and 5) Office management.

At the heart of these systems is often a local area network (LAN).

Advantages
Make your work less tedious. Manage your workload more efficiently. Reduce repetitive tasks . Make data entry easier with fewer tabs and mouse movements. Applying business rules to minimize errors and re-processing.

CONCLUSION
The success of commercial enterprises depends on the reliable processing of transactions to ensure that customer orders are met on time, and that partners and suppliers are paid & can make payment. The field of transaction processing, therefore, has become a vital part of effective business management.

The most basic business system and the HEART of most organizations is the Transaction Processing System (TPS)
