Introduction
The past decade has seen extensive growth of the telecommunications industry, with the increased popularity of internet and other data communication services. Majority of the Internet user access their service via modems connects to the POTS. Bandwidth of the telephone wires is very large but the telephone wires use only 4khz for transmitting voice signal. To efficiently use the BW of the cable wires and to increase the speed of internet accessing DSL was introduced.

What is DSL???
A modern technology that uses existing twisted-pair telephone lines to transport highbandwidth data.
Run on regular copper phone wires which is a direct dedicated connection between PC and the phone company central office .
Make effective use of previously unused bandwidth on the phone line .

It acts as a transreceiver at customers end and for enginners it is ATU_R. This modem connects the user computer through USB or ETHERNET.
It connects user data to DSL line.

SPLITTER:
Splitters works like a filter. Most DSL technologies use splitters to filter or split the DSL signal from low frequency voice signal. The separation can take place by installing filters at telephone outlets inside the customers premises. The different types of standards that DSL uses for splitting are as follows:
CAP DMT FILTER

Carrier _less amplitude phase(CAP) divides signal into 3 parts:- (0-4kHz) (25-160kHz) (240kHz-1.5MHz)
Discrete multi tone(DMT) splits the copper wire into 247 channels of 4kHz each and connects each channel with a modem. Filters block the frequencies over 4kHz to avoid interferance in telephone line.

DSLAM:
DSLAM is DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE ACCESS MULTIPLEXER. It is present at the Exchange. At the exchange, a DSLAM terminates the DSL circuits and aggregates them, where they are handed off onto other networking transport. Supports multiple type of DSL protocols and modulations.

VARIANTS OF DSL
1: HDSL is the pioneering high
2: SDSL is symmetric DSL operates over a single twisted pair with support for standard voice transmission.
3:IDSL stands for ISDN DSL similar to ISDN technology. It is lack in supporting for analog voice
4:VDSL provides very high bit rate DSL, up to 52Mbps, but requires shorter connections lengths than are generally practical.
5:ADSL is the most promising DSL technology, proving for suitable personal broadband requirements and allowing for the same channel to still act as a traditional POTS service. 6:Rate Adaptive RADSL is a further advancement which is able to automatically optimize the ADSL data rate .

Conclusion
Man always aspires for speed and efficiency and DSL technology gives a way to have faster ,secure internet service over regular phone lines along with the voice transaction without interfering it.
