BLU-RAY DISC

ABSTRACT
Blu ray also known as Blu Ray Discs is the name of next generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting & playback of a high definition video. Blu Ray Discs offer a capacity of 25 GB per layer. This is achieved by the use of a Blue laser at 405 nm wave length, an increase in the numeric aperture to 0.85 and a reduction in the cover layer from 0.6mm for DVD to 0.1 mm. Blu Ray name is a combination of Blue for the colour of the laser that is used and Ray for optical rays.

Blu ray Discs also support multi layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increase to 100 GB to 200 GB (25 GB per layer) in the future by simply adding more layer to the discs. According to the B.R.D. V1.0 specification, 1x speed will require a 36.5 MBPS data transfer rate, which means it will take about 1 hour 33 minute to record 25 GB. According to V2.0 specification which will support 2x speed to cut the time it later to copy content from 1 disk to another in half. In the future the data transfer rate is expected more than 8x speed.

INTRODUCTION
After the invention of DVDs, which revolutionized the movie industry? Our engineers is set for yet another revolution with the introduction of Blu-ray Discs (BD). With their high storage capacity, Blu-ray discs can hold and playback large quantities of high-definition video and audio, as well as photos, data and other digital content.

WHY THE NAME BLU-RAY?

The BLU-RAY name is a combination of "blue," for the color of the laser that is used, and "ray," for optical ray. BLU-RAY is used because the blue ray has much shorter wavelength than red lasers which are used in other disc formats.

WHAT IS A BLU-RAY DISCS?

A current, single-sided, standard DVD can hold 4.7 GB of information. That's about the size of an average two-hour, standarddefinition movie with a few extra features.

Thus Blu-ray is the next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD). Blu-ray discs offer a capacity of 25 GB per layer. This is achieved by the use of a blue laser at 405 nm wavelength. A double-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 54 GB, enough to hold about 4.5 hours of high-definition video or more than 20 hours of standard video.

HOW BLU-RAY DISC WORKS?

A blue laser has a shorter wavelength (405 nm) than a red laser (650 nm). The smaller beam focuses more precisely, enabling it to read information recorded in pits that are only 0.15 microns (m) long -- this is more than twice as small as the pits on a DVD. Plus, Blu-ray has reduced the track pitch from 0.74 microns to 0.32 microns. The smaller pits, smaller beam and shorter track pitch together enable a single-layer Blu-ray disc to hold more than 25 GB of information

WILL BLU-RAY REPLACE PREVIOUS DVDS?

14

Well the answer is probably YES because Its manufacturers hope so. In the meantime, JVC has developed a Blu-ray/DVD combo disc with an approximate 33.5-GB capacity, allowing for the release of video in both formats on a single disc.

ADVANTAGES
Record high-definition television without any quality loss. Record one program while watching another on the disc. Create play lists. Automatically search for an empty space on the discs. Access the Web to download subtitles and other extra features. Higher data transfer rate 36 Mbps.
19

DISADVANTAGES
Blu Ray Discs will not play on current CD & DVD players because they lack the Blue Violet Laser require to read them. If the approximate laser where included, BR Players will be able to play the other two formats. However because it would be considerable more expensive, most manufacture may not make their players backward compatible.
