At our present time, selling and producing metal is one of the most common livelihood in the Philippines.

Iron steel is a metal that is largely used in metallurgical industry. It is necessary for metal products like iron steel to maintain good quality in order to satisfy the consumers needs. Preserving the good qualities of metal is difficult. One of the problems faced by the manufacturers and consumers of metal products is the formation of rust. Rust is formed when oxidation process occurs on the metal surface. It weakens the metal resulting to dysfunction.

There is an artificial way of preserving the corrosion of the iron steel. It is by the use of paint. Paint is a chemical based product used to coat the surface of the metal to prevent from rusting. Paint is expensive and may cost harm to environment. It is more practical to use organic treatment in preventing formation of rust on the iron steel. An organic treatment for the rusting on iron steel is needed because inorganic treatments may be harmful for the iron steel and to the health of the consumer. It would be also necessary because it will be not too expensive to get.

Banana is a major fruit crop which is very abundant and popular in the Philippines. It is widely farmed here. Banana is mistaken to be classified as a tree, but it is really a large plant grass (herb). Banana is very useful due to its nutrients and its properties. Banana peelings have tannin which is very useful substance. Tannin is a substance having anti corrosive property. Tannin is usually used for making the color of the leathers and tea brownish. it can be found in vacuoles, leaves, bud, seeds, roots, and stem tissues of plants. Tannin can also be found in banana peelings.

Green banana peelings have high tannin content. Tannins are proven to have an anti corrosive property and is widely used against corrosion in most of the steels. Tannin from banana peelings extract has high potential in transforming to a solution which can prevent formation of rust on iron steel. Tannin will help to preserve the good quality of iron steel product.

This research study, if proven effective, will benefit the field of science and technology for the findings that banana (Musa paradisiacal linn) peelings extract contains tannin that prevent formation of rust. This research study will benefit the DOST, manufacturers of iron steel, farmers of banana, and consumers. The product will benefit the manufacturers of iron steel. It can be a perfect solution to their problem. Keeping the iron steel its good quality. Additional to that, this product will be not expensive because banana is very abundant in the Philippines.

The farmer will be getting a big help through this study. This study can give them a good profit by being a supplier of banana needed in the study. Lastly, it will benefit the consumers by not wasting their money on buying iron steel that rusts easily.

Generally, this study aimed to determine the anti-corrosive property of tannin in banana peelings extract against iron steel. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1. Is there a significant effect on the time where the first rust appears on the iron steel when treated by banana peelings extract? 2. Does tannin from banana peelings extract have an anti corrosive property to iron steel?

The following statements can temporarily answer the problems previously stated: 1. There is no significant effect on the time where the first rust appears on the iron steel when treated by banana peelings extract.

2. Tannin from banana peelings extract does not have an anti corrosive property to iron steel.

The researchers suppose that the following statements are true 1. The banana peelings extract does not contain any foreign bacteria and/or substance

2. The iron steel does not contain any other component in its structure

The study deals about the anti corrosive property of tannin on banana peelings extract. This study focused on the reaction time of formation of rust in the iron steel when treated by the banana peelings extract. The effect of the banana peelings extract is determined. The research study was conducted in Aniban 1, Bacoor, Cavite. The period of the study is from August 28 to September 18, 2011.

The research study does not include the research on other anti corrosive chemicals as it may confuse readers and broaden the researchs scope. The research does not also include the research about the other components of banana peelings extract.

The following terms was defined by how they are used in the research study: Anti-corrosive property It is the property that have the capacity to prevent the corrosion process of iron steel Reaction time It is the time it takes for the first rust to form in the metal with the banana peelings extract and with the set up without the banana peelings extract.

The start or the input of this research paper is the tannin from banana peelings and the iron steel. They are the points that will make the research understand the anti corrosive property of tannin in banana peelings extract against iron steel. The process is the application of tannin from banana peelings extract on iron steel. The expected result or output is that there will be a delayed appearance of rust on the iron steel.

The research study was done by the researchers originally and did not duplicate the study from other studies even though there are some similarities. This study is conducted to test the effect of tannin from banana peelings extract in preventing formation of rust on iron steel that made this study unique because there were only few natural plants that effectively prevents formation of rust. Even though there are some studies and literatures which are used as bases of this study, the product of this study is still unique because the researchers use banana peelings as their main material that is a local crop in the Philippines and never used as anti-corrosive product.

The research study used was a research design with experimental method. Specifically the research design that is applicable for the study is the two group design. The design used was two group with one experimental set up and one controlled set up. The two set up will be observed and the result will be compared. The design will be used to test the effect on the corrosion process of three metals with the tannin extract and the other metals with no extract to have an accurate observation and results.

The independent variable in the research study is the tannin extract from the banana peeling extract to the iron steel. This is the independent variable because it is what to be tested on the experiment. The dependent variable on the research study was the time it took for the first formation of rust with the independent variable, the application of tannin from banana peelings extract. The controlled variable is the amount of banana that was used in the experiment.

The researchers gathered an amount of 1kg of green bananas for the study. The 1kg of green bananas was boiled for 10 minutes with 1L of tap water. After the extract has been extracted and cooled down, it is applied on the iron steel then soaked in water. The other is just soaked in water without the extract of banana peelings. The researchers performed tests to take average reaction time of the experimental set ups to form rust compared to the controlled set up. Then, the data gathered and results were tabulated.
