Organizational Behavior Case:

Too Nice to People Zaheer Aslam 1531-110005

CASE HISTORY:

John has just graduated from College of Business Administration at state university, and has joined his family's small business, which employs 25 semi-skilled workers. After observing John during the first week on the job his father called him in and said, "John, I have had a chance to observe your working with the men and women for the past two days and although I hate to say something but I must. You are just too nice to people. I know they taught you human relations stuff at the university but it just does not work here. I remember when the Hawthorne Studies were first reported and everybody in the academic field got all excited about them, but believe me, there is more to managing people than just being nice to them".

Q1. How would you react to your father's comments if you were John?

To some extent Johns father is right in saying that there is more to managing people than just being nice to them but in my opinion Hawthorne study is not only concerned with the human relations at work place or being nice to workers but it deals with how the human behavior is affected by various variables at the workplace and how the impact of these variables on human behavior affect the productivity.

Q2. Do you think John's father understood and interpreted the Hawthorne Studies correctly?

I think he got some misconception about Hawthorn study, he hasnt got completely an idea about Hawthorn study.

Q3. What phase of management do you think Johns father has gone through in this family business? Do think he understands the significance of recent trends in the environment and how the new paradigm will affect his business?

In this family business, Johns father not properly understand the recent trends in the environment, he has gone through an old concept of management which can deeply affected on his business. He should adopt a new concept of management in which a business is operated, supervision and execution of management policies. In this sense he would have to understand the recent business environment that will provides him with a clear and concise introduction to all of the most important activities taking place inside and outside organizations.

Q4. If you were John how would you explain to your father the new perspective that is needed and how the study of organizational behavior will help the business be successful in the new Paradigm?

If I was at the place of john, I would have explained my father about how being nice to workers can lead to increase the motivation level of workers. They feel important , responsible and working in a social environment will definitely increase the productivity.

I would never ever question my fathers ability to run a business but if I believe in something I would explain it to my father with logical reasoning....
