What are GHG?

A greenhouse gas (GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range.

Common Greenhouse Gases

Carbon dioxide (CO2) Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)

Objectives
Obtain an Estimation of GHG emissions in

Kandy Municipality.
Compare GHG emissions of Kandy

Municipality with other known cities in the world

Suggest required reduction measures to

be taken in order to bring down GHG emission levels.

Kandy Municipality
Government: Kandy Municipal Council Population: 110,049 Population Density: 57 /Sq.km Area : 5/2/12 SOURCE : http://www.kandycity.org Wikipedia 1,940km2(749

Methodology
Collect data on GHG emissions related

with

1. Consumption of energy in the city-Mainly

Electricity & gaseous fossil fuel.

emissions CO eq(Gg) electricity

2

= electricity demand in kandy(kWh) * emission factor(Gg/kWh)

2. Amount of Solid waste disposal as

landfills.

3. Emissions occurred in water treatment

plants.
2

emissions CO eq(Gg) wastewaters = Amount of treated wastewater in kandy (Gg CBO5 ) * emission factor(Gg/Gg CBO5)
4. Agricultural Lands.

emissions CO eq(Gg) Agricultural lands

Calculation of the factors

When calculating factors a precise

approach should be used. professionals will be used

So previous work carried out by 1. Bjrn Kstermanna, Maximilian Kainza

and Kurt-Jrgen Hlsbergena,(2008). Modeling carbon cycles and estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from organic and conventional farming systems

Analysis & Results

Total GHG emissions in the city is

evaluated giving details on contribution of each sector(Electricity etc.)

Results are presented as how many tons

of Equivalent of CO2 molecules is emitted .

Also percentage contribution of each

contributor is Calculated.

Reduction measures
Finally suitable methods of Reduction of

GHG emissions can be developed such as

1. Use of Renewable energy sources. 2. Using advanced methods to dispose

of waste in order to minimize GHG emissions. producer gas using Gasification GHG emissions as such

3. Use of solid waste to synthesis

methods like

4. How cultivate farms with reduced 5/2/12
