EE305.9 1
Objectives

Upon completion of this period the student will be able

to know
•Core Materials
(A) silicon iron alloys
(B) Nickel iron alloys
(C) Cobalt iron alloys
(D) Powdered iron core
(E) Ferrite Cores

EE305.9 2
Core materials
Silicon Iron Alloys :

• This reduces the eddy current losses and hysteresis

losses in Transformers.

• Silicon is added in the range of 0.2 to 4%.

• The main limitation is its thickness is only 0.5 mm.

• The two methods are hot rolled and cold rolled grain
oriented sheets.

Ferrite Core
EE305.9 4
Powdered Iron Core

EE305.9 5
EE305.9 6
Nickel Iron Alloys

• These alloys gives high permeability

• These alloys have low losses

• Different compositions are

36%Nickel Iron
50%Nickel Iron
76%Nickel Iron

EE305.9 7
Nickel Iron Alloys

• 76% Alloy is called perm alloy

• Supermalloy is formed with 76% Nickel,
5% Molybdenum,15 %Iron and 1% Manganese

EE305.9 8
Cobalt iron alloys

• Formed by addition of Cobalt.

• Increases the saturation but reduces the
resistivity.
• Permendur is formed by adding 50% of Cobalt.
• Supermendor Is formed by adding 50% Cobalt, 2%.
• Vanadium to Iron.

EE305.9 9
Powdered iron core
• Formed by Iron Powder, Organic Insulating Binder.
• Made by subjecting the magnetic material to Carbon
Monoxide gas under pressure.
• Made in different shapes
Rods
Toroids
Pot cores

EE305.9 10
Ferrite Cores
• These are compounds of crystalline oxides
(MnO Fe2 O3)
• Suitable for high frequencies
• Different shapes are
Rods
Pots
X -cores

EE305.9 11
Summary
• Silicon Iron alloys reduces the Eddy Current losses and
Hysteresis losses in Transformers.

• Nickel Iron alloys gives high permeability
