Inductors in Series

• Inductors can be connected in series in

two ways, they are

1. Series aiding.

4. Series opposition.

• When two coils are connected in series such that the flux

produced by one aids the flux produced by the other they are

said to be Series aiding.

• When two coils are connected in series such that the flux
produced by the other they are said to be connected in series
opposition.

• In this the current through the two coils flows in opposite

direction.
LSO = L1 + L 2 − 2M
EC-303.69 6
• Two coils connected in series have an equivalent inductance

LSA if the connection is aiding and an equivalent inductance

LSO if the connection is opposing.

LSA = L1 + L 2 + 2M (1)

LSO = L1 + L 2 − 2M (2)

Subtract eq(1) from (2)

LSA − LSO = 4 M

Problem
• A coil of inductance 150 µ H is magnetically coupled
to another coils of 750µH. The coefficient of coupling
between the coils is 0.06. Calculate the inductance, if the
two coils are connected as

i. Series aiding.
ii. Series opposing.
Given data
L1=150 µH

L2=750 µH and

K=0.06 EC-303.69 8
• We have mutual inductance
M = K L1L 2
M = 20.125µH
i. When the coils are in series aiding:

Equivalent inductance = LSA = L1 + L 2 + 2M

= 940.25µH
ii. When the coils are series opposing:

Equivalent inductance = LSO = L1 + L 2 − 2M

= 859.75µH

Exercise

• Two coils with inductances in the ratio of four to one

have coupling coefficient K= 0.6. When these coils are

connected in series aiding, the equivalent inductances is

44.4mH. Find L1,L2 and M?

EC-303.69 10
Inductive coupling

• An alternating current flowing in one circuit produces magnetic

flux which induces a voltage in the second circuit coupled to

the first.

• This results in induced current and transfer of energy from field

(ie) primary circuit to secondary circuit.

• This phenomenon is known as inductive coupling because

coupling of two circuits is achieved through inductance.

EC-303.69 11
Types of inductively coupled circuits

• Inductively coupled circuits are divided into

3. Untuned Secondary

6. Tuned Secondary

9. Tuned Primary and Tuned Secondary

EC-303.69 12
Untuned Secondary
• In this case the secondary is untuned and has resistive

load only as shown below

EC-303.69 13
Tuned Secondary
• This is also called Single tuned coupled circuit, has
resonant circuit in the secondary (ie) a tuning capacitor
across secondary as shown below.

EC-303.69 14
Tuned Primary and Tuned Secondary
• In this type of coupling both primary and secondary
circuit can be resonant as shown below.

• It is also called as double tuned circuits.

• These are two types.

2. Doubled tuned series fed.

2. Double tuned Parallel fed.
