Objectives

on completion of this period, you would be able to know.

• What is mutual inductance.

• What is Coefficient of coupling.

EC105.42 2
Recap
We have discussed so far

• Self inductance.
• Factors effecting the self inductance.

EC105.42 3
Now we know what happens when coil-1(L1)
is excited with an A.C.

figure-1

EC105.42 4
The magnetic flux is produced around
the coil-1 (L1).

Figure-2

EC105.42 5
Place another coil-2 (L2) near to the coil-1 (L1) and
,if a meter (G) is connected across coil-2 (L2) it
shows deflection.

Figure-3

EC105.42 6
Can you guess
why the galvanometer( G) shows deflection?

Whole/part of flux produced by coil-1(L1) links with

the coil-2 (L2).

EC105.42 7
Mutual inductance

• The ability of varying current in one coil to induce voltage

in a near by coil is known as mutual inductance.

• It is denoted by the letter ‘M’.

• It’s units are Henrys (H).

EC105.42 8
Mutual inductance

Figure-4
EC105.42 9
Mutual inductance can be expressed as
M=VL2 / (di/dt).

Where
VL2 Is the mutually induced e.m.f produced in the
second coil.

di/dt is the rate of change through the first coil.

EC105.42 11
Figure-6

EC105.42 12
What you have understood from the pictures?

EC105.42 13
The observations from picture1 are

• The flux of coil-1 (L1) does not all

link with the coil-2 (L2).

• No mutual inductance.

EC105.42 14
The observations from picture 2 are

• All the flux produced by coil-1 (L1) links with

the coil-2 (L2).

• Mutual inductance is maximum.

EC105.42 15
It is clear from pictures

Two coils are said to be magnetically coupled if full or part.

of the flux produced by one coil links with the other.

EC105.42 16
coefficient of coupling

• The degree of magnetic coupling is known as coefficient

of coupling.

• It’s value should be always < 1.

• It is denoted by the letter ‘k’.

• It has no units.

EC105.42 17
co-efficient of coupling

Relation between self inductances of two coils, their

mutual inductance and co-efficient of coupling.

EC105.42 18
co-efficient of coupling
The coefficient of coupling between two coils is given by

K =M/ √ L1 L2

flux linkage between L1 & L2

K = -------------------------------------
total flux produced by L1

EC105.42 19
co-efficient of coupling

Points to be remember

If
k ≠ 1,the coils are said to be lightly coupled.
K = 1, the coils are said to be tightly
coupled.
K = 0, the coils are having no coupling.

EC105.42 20
Summary

We have discussed about the

• Mutual inductance.

• Coefficient of coupling.
