Assist in Creating an Appropriate Learning Environment. Enhance Participation & Involvement of the Group. Give Greater Control of the Learning Process to the Participants. Promote Group Interaction.
Learning objectives for the sub topic or the module. Special characteristics of the training group.
Time allocation for the sub topic, module or the session. Level of competence of the trainer in effective use of the method.

INTRODUCTION
This is a development technique requiring the trainee to assume a role in a given situation & act out behaviour associated with that role.

Focus on interpersonal responses
Outcomes depend on the emotional (and subjective) reactions of the other trainees
The more meaningful the exercise, the higher the level of participant focus
Emphasises the importance of understanding & appreciating others points of view, behaviour & feelings. Improve the skills of the participants in the areas of problem solving & decision-making. Provides opportunities for introducing new stimuli & evoking new responses.
Promote interaction among different players. Although the roles are defined through scripts, the participants can evolve & develop their respective roles.

Participants should be cautioned not to allow their personal prejudices & biases. Appoint separate observers. Contents observation may include to what extent the individuals evolved their role. Observer must prepare observation sheet listing important guidelines.

Those participants who are shy & introvert, role play can be an embarrassing experience. People could feel threatened when they perceive that their actions & behaviour are under observation. Some participants feel that they may look foolish before the group, playing someone else. It is open to criticism for lack of realism.
