Assist in Creating an Appropriate Learning Environment. Enhance Participation & Involvement of the Group. Give Greater Control of the Learning Process to the Participants. Promote Group Interaction.

INTRODUCTION
This is a development technique requiring the trainee to assume a role in a given situation & act out behaviour associated with that role.

Trainees act out characters assigned to them.


Information regarding the situation is provided to the trainees.

The more meaningful the exercise, the higher the level of participant focus

OBJECTIVES OF ROLE PLAY


Provide a mirror to participants to see themselves as

others see them. It enhances self-awareness.

Emphasises the importance of understanding & appreciating others points of view, behaviour & feelings. Improve the skills of the participants in the areas of problem solving & decision-making. Provides opportunities for introducing new stimuli & evoking new responses.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS IN ROLE PLAY


It is important that exercise reflects the true working conditions of the participants work life.

Promote interaction among different players. Although the roles are defined through scripts, the participants can evolve & develop their respective roles.

The participants should be aware of the parameters within

which they can perform.

Effectively monitor the role play.

Participants should be cautioned not to allow their personal prejudices & biases. Appoint separate observers. Contents observation may include to what extent the individuals evolved their role. Observer must prepare observation sheet listing important guidelines.

LIMITATIONS OF ROLE PLAY

Those participants who are shy & introvert, role play can be an embarrassing experience. People could feel threatened when they perceive that their actions & behaviour are under observation. Some participants feel that they may look foolish before the group, playing someone else. It is open to criticism for lack of realism.

writing a role play & conducting it.

Participants often lose themselves in a role & engage in inadvertent self-discloser, exposure & ventilation.
