QUALITY ISSUES IN

ENGINEERING

Jack Welch on a new quality program

from William Carley, Charging Ahead: To keep GEs profits rising The Wall Street Journal, Jan 22, 1997
You cant behave in a calm, rational manner. Youve got to be out there on the lunatic fringe. You have to tell your people that quality is critical to survival, you have to demand everybody gets trained, you have to cheerlead, you have to have incentive bonuses. You have to say, We must do this.

GENERAL ELECTRIC

According to Jack Welch quality is critical to survival The quality-program is a mammoth undertaking 40% of GE executive bonuses depends on implementation of quality program. Previously, bonuses were based on profits and cash flows GEs quality program, borrowed from Motorola, Inc., involves training black belts for four months in statistical and other quality-enhancing measures Future of GE employees depends on their being black belts

Whats the use, though????

Well, Mr. Welch said, Your customers are happy with you, you are not firefighting, you are not running a reactive mode. GE hoped the program, by preventing costly snafus, would save $7-$10 billion over the next decade and thus bolster profits. And..it did!!!!

Users dont like bugs

O.k., and now youll do exactly what Im telling you !

Quality: Different Strokes

Many people joke about the poor quality of products. If GM Cars were like Microsoft OS Computers For no reason your car would crash twice a day. The airbag would say are you sure before going off. Your car wont let you in because your key expired. People seem to accept systems being down occasionally or needing to reboot their PCs There are many examples in the news about quality problems So, lets not forget.Quality is important!!!
