Also I want to thank Giram for his support and advice. At last but not list my appreciation goes to our department for giving us this huge advantage.

Executive summery

This internship report is prepared as per the

outline for the internship report given to us by Jimma University, department of Mechanical engineering. The main objective of this internship program report is to present what I did, where I did and how I did the work tasks at the internship program. It describes the background of my internship hosting company such as its history, its main products or services, and the end users of the products or services.

It also describes my hosting companys overall

organization, work sections and workflows in each section. The report describes the aims i gain regarding improving my practical skills, theoretical knowledge, interpersonal communication skill, etc.

BACKGROUND METAL AND ENGEENERING COOPERATION AKAKI BASIC METAL INDUSTRY

ABMI (Akaki basic metal industry) is one of among the defense industries which was established manufacturing spare parts and hand tools. Previously the industry was named as akaki spare part and hand tools social corporation

..
and producing a larger quantity of hand tools like hammer, shower, roller and etc . For the future

the company is planning to produce spare parts in order to stop importing most spare parts. The industry is planning to build machines besides manufacturing spare parts in order to save large amount of foreign currency. The industry is currently doing expansion work in the manufacturing quantity and quality of machines to develop the manufacturing process. Currently plane to supply row material for Ethiopian millennium dam project.

Akaki basic metal industry is located in south east of addis

abeba in akaki town it far away 25 km from addis abeba. akaki basic metal industry is one of the important industry in Etiopia. It was established in 1989 EC the factory built in cooperation with the government of the republic of italic was inautgurated by comrade MENGISTU HAILEMARIAM and general sector of the PDRE and commander in chief of revolutionary army force. The company was called akaki spare part and hand tools social cooperation The spare part factory project being implemented within the firm work of the economical scientific and technical cooperation between the government of socialistic Ethiopia and the government of Italy

There are 10 main departments in this manufacturing factory.

LATHE SECTION
This section Contains a large no of lathes

which serves for functions like facing, turning, threading, parting, knurling, grooving (internal and external), chamfering, and tapering e.t.c

Lathes contain five main parts Head stock This part contains the attachments (chuck, face plate) and the internal parts Tail stock The tail stock serves two functions, one is to find the center point of a work piece and the other is to hold a cutter in drilling operation.

Carriage The carriage contains the tool post which can move in right to left as well as in the to and fro direction. The tool post contains the cutter and can be rotated at an angle. Bed The bed carries the tool post and the tail stock. Lead screw Lathes are specified by Length from lathe stock to tail stock The size of the diameter of the work piece that can be hold Length of the bed

DESIGN DEPARTMENT
In this department redesigning of job orders is done

by draft man and engineers. The professionals in this section use the soft wares, TO redraw the job order by taking the dimensions from the actual object. After the drawings are done they will be arranged in A4 format with its views and isometric drawing to express the drawing as much as possible. This finished drawing will be sent to the head of this department for checking and approval .After this step the engineers write a technological procedure for the finished drawing

QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTEMENT

The main task of this department is to check the

measurements of the job according to the dimensions given on the drawings. Sometimes jobs can pass through two or more machines (e.g. lathe, milling, grinding e.t.c),so when jobs are passed from one machine to other they will be taken to the quality section for measurement weather they are done in the required dimension or are left with the proper clearance for further operation. If the objects are far from the dimension given in the drawing then the department will reject the piece. This department uses several types of instruments for measurements and evaluation

MACHINE SHOP
The conventional machine shop contains

three different types of machine shops and one cutter store. LATHE MACHINE SHOP MILLING MACHINE SHOP HEAVY DUTY MACHINE SHOP CUTTER STORE PLANER AND SHAPER WORK SHOP

CUTTER STORE
The cutter store contains a large number of cutters for the different machines in the

manufacturing factory.

The benefits I have gained from working in ABMI

I can say that I have improved my previous

skills and I even developed new practical skills that, I hardly had practical and theoretical exposure before I entered in to ABMI . So, I can say full-hearted that this intern program has shown me how to handle some practical aspects of technical terms. I may not be able to explain all of them in here but I have tried to mention some of them as follows:-

I can say that I improved my welding capacity. I know how to cut materials using different kinds of grinders and cutters. I develop the skill of working in noisy work shop. I learned how the school documentation is necessary in the working area. I improve how replace different kind of gear to machine. I have developed different kinds of pattern how to did

The kind of challenges I have faced in ABMI

I have encountered with different kinds of obstacles and

challenges in my first work expedition. These challenges have left me with life time lessons which have taught me many great things. So, I am very much honored to say that these were not problems rather they were worth telling experiences. I have scrawled down some of the very points below: At least no mechanical engineer in the technical staff. There is lack of well trained human resource. So most of the work is accomplished through the medium of experience which intern does not give comfort.

The measures I have taken in order to win these challenges

I believe in something in my nature that is if

things go in other way around do nothing just stay still until you conceive the core of the problem to dry it up from its grass root. So this thing has worked out for me and it has even made the passage way very easy. So, I was not troubled to make friends in a very short period of time. In general what I have done was I have tried to buy some time to connect myself to the working principles of the industry.

Comment
I have tried to suggest some crucial points that help the

company at large. For this report I have included only the suggestion that. I took in industry air conditioning, scrape material wastage, pattern Lack of Human safety, power sand and dust separator lack of instrument water treatment

RECOMMENDATION
From the time I spent in the industry we identify not only things

that enhance the manufacturing process but also things that are defects for the manufacturing process. Lack of enough cutters enforces the machinists to borrow, spending the production time. A cutter collection should be placed for each machinist. Using the same machine in the two shifts cause the work quality to deteriorate kills the machinists time since they spend many hours to dismantle others attachments and place their own. Lack of means to reuse the rejected pieces and chips causes the company to lose large amount of money. Reusing the left overs by melting and making them functional for application which doesnt require material property such as in medals and badges manufacturing and gift articles manufacturing.

Air conditioning system is necessary since

create a suitable work environment prepares the worker for a better performance in their jobs. The industry is performing only based on customer order, but to take it to the next level the industry should have to conduct a market research and should have to produce by making itself competitive in the market.

Conclusion
While I sum up my report I would love to say or write down

some very crucial points . I was perplexed by the whole idea of internship from the day I have heard it exists to the day I began to work for the last consecutive four months. In general I could say that I had vague attitude I even wished many times if it does not ever exists. But now I can tell that it has both an advantage and disadvantage .well this can be briefly seen as follow .if one industry which cannot afford highly paid experts can use this opportunity to fill up some of their vacant spaces. At this time we do not have to forget that the student is benefited as well since he/she has got practical exposure.

As disadvantage i can put for forward one simple

instance which has many implications. The university has to be in position to state directions which are uniform for all companies as to how this company accept and host these students. If this is not met by the respective universities the students who are assigned to different industries might be oppressed and they might be deprived some of the things they have to get. In here we can raise the case of pocket money which is not uniform. The other thing is that the company I was working in did not give us either an office or computer.

Lastly, I believe that

this internship has to be continued since it has got lot of virtues.
