SV, SVC, SVO,SVOO, SVOC, SVOA, SVA

Sentence structures are the groups of words that

combine together to comprise the building units of a well-formed sentences.

Elements of a Sentence

1. Subject
The subject is the noun group that comes before the

verb. Examples: 1. Jane cries. (subject) 2. I want to talk. (subject)

Noun Group
A noun () the name of a person, animal place,

thing, or idea. Examples: Peter, Macao, dog, love, work, apple

Noun Group
A pronoun () is a type of noun that refers

anaphorically (avoid repetition) to another noun or noun phrase.

Examples: I, you, him, we, me, my, he, she, it

Noun Group
A gerund () is a verbal form (derived

from/having the nature of a verb) that functions as a verbal noun.

Examples: 1. Walking is good exercise. (subject)


2. Amy loves reading. (object)

Noun Group

A noun phrase() is frequently a

noun accompanied by modifiers, is a group of related words acting as a noun.


Examples: 1. This big banana is not mine. (Subject)

2. She has a very big banana. (Object)

Noun Group
A noun clause() contains a subject and verb

and can do anything that a noun can do. Example: Tom who is very fat is very clever in the class. (Subject)
The fact that you are talkative is true.

2. Verb
Verbs can be classified as 1. verb to be (be, seem, become) & verb to do 2. transitive verbs (follow by an object) e.g. I read novels. Sue plays piano. 3. intransitive verbs (do not have a direct object) e.g. Kelly coughs. Kenneth died.

3. Object
An object is the noun group which follows the verb of

doing. Examples: 1. Jacob collects stamps. (object) 2. Allan created a story. (object)

4. Complement
A Complement is the Adjective or Adverb which

follows the verb of being Examples: 1. Peter was brave . (Complement) 2. She called her students babies. (Complement)

5. Adverbial

An adverbial is a group of words that functions in the same

way as an adverb. adverbs of degree (e.g. a lot, very) adverbs of time (e.g. yesterday, before, after) adverbs of place (e.g. at school, in the bedroom) adverbs of frequency (e.g. once, sometimes)

Examples: 1. Before the play, we met up at the theatre. (adverbial) 2. We are going to have a test tomorrow. (adverbial)

Sentence Structures
1. Subject + Verb (SV) - The simplest of sentence patterns - Uses an intransitive verb
e.g. Samantha left. May is sleeping. The sun rises.

2. Subject + Verb + Complement (SVC) - Uses linking verb - Any form of the verb without an action verb
e.g. The idea of the story is difficult. It sounds great. Everybody looks tidy.

3. Subject + Verb + Object (SVO) - Uses the direct object
e.g. Daisy kisses her son. He is eating an ice cream.

e.g. Miss Anna gives us tests. I paid you 3500 dollars.

e.g. Sammie teaches her son patiently. Chloe made me sad. We called our principal Sr Judith.

e.g. We fed the cat yesterday. Before the teacher came, they had broken the window. We saw them in the evening.
