Out of 184 countries surveyed by WHO in 2004 India is ranked 150 with 0.86 ltrs of pure alcohol consumed per capita per annum. Indians love their whisky, vodka and rum, but are yet to develop a taste for wine. Approx. 10% of state revenue comes from taxes on alcohol sales with an exception of Punjab where this earning accounts for 33%. Kerala has highest per capita per annum consumption of Alcohol i.e 8 ltrs and Punjab has IInd highest with 7.9 ltrs.

Family Income spent on alcohol is more in urban areas. The age of initiation to alcohol is going down, in 2006 it was 13.5 years in Kerala (ADICINDIA 2007)

ADVERTISING OF LIQUOR

Products advertising for liquor is banned in India since 1995. Ads promoting directly or indirectly for sale, consumption of wine, alcohol, liquor or other intoxicants and their extended brands are banned from advertising. With direct promotion of liquor banned in the country, the liquor companies have little choice but to switch over to surrogate/ proxy advertising. Therefore, the liquor companies have intentionally blurred the line between products to promote their brands in some way or the other. Ex: Royal Challenge, King Fisher Mineral Water etc.
