THE PROBLEM
Even the cylindrical tanks with newish paint coatings need tank cleaning. This is the wall of a cylindrical tank on a ship less than ten years old. The paint surface has been abraded by high pressure cleaning and now the mud keys onto it.
When considering tank cleaning, operators should also consider mud pits on drilling rigs. Tank cleaning machines work just as well as long as they only jet downwards. And transfer of dirty water to the ships is avoided.

It can be seen from the following table that the tank cleaning systems vastly reduced the build up of solids within the tanks and would therefore reduce the tank cleaning requirements.
