What is Cloud computing ?

Cloud computing is a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT services, which is based on Internet protocols. It provides computation, software, data access, and storage services that do not require end-user knowledge of the physical location and configuration of the system that delivers the services. 4/19/12

Concept.

4/19/12

The concept of cloud computing fills a perpetual need of IT a way to increase capacity or add capabilities on the fly without investing in new infrastructure, training new personnel, or licensing new software. Cloud computing encompasses any subscription-based or pay-per-use service that, in real time over the Internet, extends IT's existing capabilities.

History.

The actual term "cloud" borrows from telephony in that telecommunications companies, who until the 1990s offered primarily dedicated point-to-point data circuits, began offering Virtual Private Network (VPN) services with comparable quality of service but at a much lower cost.

Cont

The term "cloud" is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on the cloud drawing used in the past to represent the telephone network. Cloud computing is a natural evolution of the widespread adoption of virtualization, service-oriented architecture, autonomic, and utility computing.

Types of cloud

Public cloud

Public cloud describes cloud computing is the traditional mainstream sense.

Community cloud Community cloud shares infrastructure between several organizations from a specific 4/19/12

Hybrid cloud Hybrid cloud is a composition of two or more clouds like:- private, community, or public that remain unique entities but are bound together. Private cloud Private cloud is infrastructure operated solely for a single organization, whether managed internally or by a third-party and hosted internally or externally.

Layers..

4/19/12

Client.

A cloud client consists of computer hardware or computer software that relies on cloud computing for application delivery and that is in essence useless without it. Examples include some computers, phones and other devices, operating systems, and browsers.
4/19/12

Application..

Cloud application services also known as Software as a Service (SaaS) deliver software as a service over the Internet, eliminating the need to install and run the application on the customer's own computers and simplifying maintenance and support.
4/19/12

Platform.

Cloud platform services, also known as platform as a service (PaaS) deliver a computing platform or solution stack as a service, often consuming cloud infrastructure and sustaining cloud application.

4/19/12

Infrastructure.

Cloud infrastructure services, also known as "infrastructure as a service" (IaaS), deliver computer infrastructure typically a platform virtualization environment as a service, along with raw storage and networking.

4/19/12

Server.

The servers layer consists of computer hardware or computer software products that are specifically designed for the delivery of cloud services, including multicore processors, cloud-specific operating systems and combined offerings.
4/19/12

Characteristics..

It improves with users' ability to reprovision technological infrastructure resources. Cost is claimed to be reduced and in a public cloud delivery model capital expenditure is converted to operational expenditure.

Cont..

Device and location independence :- A user can access system using a web browser regardless of their location or what device he is using (e.g., PC, mobile phone). As infrastructure is off-site and accessed via the Internet, user can connect from anywhere. Security could improve due to centralization of data, increased security-focused resources, etc. 4/19/12

Cont..

Multi-tenancy :- Enables sharing of resources and costs across a large pool of users thus allowing for:

Centralization of infrastructure in locations with lower costs. Peak-load capacity increases.

Maintenance of cloud computing applications is easier, because they do not need to be installed on each user's computer.
