The Growth of Asian Nationalism

ACTIVITY

OBJECTIVES

identify the leaders of Asian countries who spearheaded nationalist movements in their country;
analyze the effects of Western occupation of Asia in the emergence of nationalism;

narrate and explain the different rebellions in Asia which aimed at expelling Western powers in the country;

discuss the efforts of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Gen. Chiang Kai Shek, Mao Ze Dong, Mohandas Gandhi, Jose Rizal, Achmed Sukarno, Ho Chi Min, etc. in unifying their respective countries in spite of differing ideologies; and,
explain the basis of East Asia, South Asian and Southeast Asian nationalism in relation to Western occupation of Asia.

IMPORTANT TERMS

Nation a nation is a tightly knit


group of people which share a common culture (common language, institutions, religion, and historical experience).

State - A State (note the capital "S")


is a self-governing political entity. The term State can be used interchangeably with country.

Nationalism refers to loyalty and


devotion to a nation; especially a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups.

The term nationalism is generally used to describe two phenomena:

the attitude that the members of a nation have when they care about their national identity; and, the actions that the members of a nation take when seeking to achieve (or sustain) self-determination.

Patriotism -- covers such attitudes


as: pride in its achievements and culture, the desire to preserve its character and the basis of the culture, and identification with other members of the nation.

Democracy -- refers to a
government chosen by the people, whether it is direct or representative.

Communism -- a theoretical
economic system characterized by the collective ownership of property and by the organization of labor for the common advantage of all members.

Socialism -- Any of various political


philosophies that support social and economic equality, collective decisionmaking and public control of productive capital and natural resources, as advocated by socialists.
