Smaller Schools, Smaller Classrooms: What About the Arts?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLkbZYgEvA8 In October 2009 Governor Mitch Daniels cut $300 million out of Indiana public schools budgets. As a result, school districts across the state have tightened their budgets by eliminating fine and performing art programs.

Testimonials
Student: When I was in eighth grade the high school I
was to attend in the fall cut its band, orchestra, and choir programs. Throughout elementary school and middle school I was actively involved in playing trumpet in the band and marching band. I was greatly distraught that I would be unable to continue trumpet in high school due to the fact that I could not afford private lessons nor could I afford to join a youth symphony without applying for scholarships. Thankfully, I learned of Art Ed and throughout my high school career I have thoroughly enjoyed Art Eds programs as well as grown and succeeded as a musician. I have received one on one teaching from the Butler University student volunteers as well as my band director who taught high school band for twenty years prior to teaching at Art Ed. The student volunteers have especially impacted me in the fact that they have inspired me to pursue a music degree and mentored me along the way by helping me with the college audition process. Lastly, the concerts and ensembles that I have performed in each semester have impacted me and helped grow as a musician by actively engaging myself in Art.-Jake Brown, 17, Student personal growing experience for my daughter, but one that I am quite sure will shape her for the rest of her life. I am grateful that my daughter has the opportunity to attend Art Ed and sing in the choir after school. Her IPS school does not have a choral program, and without the enrichment and cultural learning she receives at Art Ed, I feel there would be a great hole in her education.-Mary Smith, mother
