The circuit mainly comprises of an input section, control section, display section, output section. The input section consists of switches (s1-s5). Switches s1, s2, s3 & s4 represent road1, road2, road3 & road4 respectively. S5 is a toggle switch witch is used for reset. The count of vehicles on each road is obtained by pressing the push button switches corresponding to each road. The heart and brain of the entire circuit is an 89C52 microcontroller. The microcontroller has a power supply unit, a reset unit, and an oscillator circuit for its fundamental working. P1.0 P1.7 act as the input port. 74HC20 is used for decoding purpose. Depending on the input to pins 1, 2, 4 and 5 of 74HC20. We can select either the RAM or the demultiplexer, which can be used to select the peripheral ic's. If all the inputs to the above described pins are high, E1 is activated and 74F138 which act as the demultiplexer is enabled.

74HC138 is a 3-8 decoder or demultiplexer. It can be used as an 8 out put demultiplexer by using one of the active low enable inputs as data input, while the remaining inputs are used as strobes. Depending upon the inputs to pins 1,2 and 3 of 74F138 we can select any one of the following peripheral devices 74HC373 (U8) act as an address latch 74HC373 (U9)Is simply a display buffer .An 89C52 program must interact with the outside world using input and output devices that communicates with human beings . One of the most common devices attached to an 89C52 is an LCD display. Some of the common LCDs connect to 89C52 are 16X2 and 20X2 displays. This means 16 characters per lines

by two lines and 20 characters per line by two lines respectively. Here we use 16X2 displays

The lighting of LEDs, which corresponds to the traffic signals, indicates the out put. The LED indication is programmed taking into consideration the number of vehicles on each road and time required for the vehicle to cross the junction.
