Major O&G Companies are Standardising on Mathcad
Maersk, Drilling Operations
Audit requirements to ISO 5167 on metering devices for
oil/gas flow. Excel made iterations difficult and little
transparency. Mathcad is used for all auditing/checking.
Previous tools written reports, calculators,
spreadsheets, programming solutions, etc
Smith Rea, Metering Performance
Subsea7, Pipelines & Structures
Mathcad used to analyse and communicate drilling
performance calculations between on-shore and
offshore teams resulted in significant drilling
performance and production improvements
Mathcad is the critical tool for performing & documenting
all pipeline and structural calculations to ISO and DNV
specifications.

Requirements

To design and engineer effectively and efficiently, engineering
calculations must be captured and re-used as critical intellectual
property (IP)

Mathcad leverages engineering intent that cannot be captured by
the CAD systems and design geometry, driving design through
engineering best-practices
2009 PTC 4
Inefficiencies of Traditional Tools in capturing design intent & IP
1. Hand Calculations / Reference Material
Easy to use and everyone has it
But audit process is a complete re-work to check EVERY
calculation, correct unit-handling, etc
Its strictly a static documentation solution modifications or reusability
requires a re-write
2. Excel (& Word) ~ Pervasive, but Imperfect
Excel - live calculations but formulae hard to read auditing

difficult/lack of documentation in one tool
No units management (eg Mars Explorer issue, etc)
Prone to error re-use (90% of spreadsheets over 150 rows)
3. Programming-based Solutions
Very specialized capabilities, requires very fluent users (non-engineers)
Geared toward heavy analysis/simulation (where applicable)
Typically a high learning curve, low reusability, not for documentation

Mathcad ~ addresses clear, documented,
reusable engineering solution

Mathcad
Intuitive
Easy to use, whiteboard interface
Natural math notation human readable
Comprehensive
Combines text, live math, graphics, and
annotations in a single worksheet
Unmatched breadth of application-
powerful mathematics functionality
Unit awareness
Automates process; repeatable &
auditable
Interoperable
Easily integrates with other engineering
applications

Application of Mathcad to perform a probabilistic study and plot the results. Looking for an
intuitive and light tool which could assist in performing the analysis without knowing any
programming languages

Mathcad worksheet to support decision about the subsea valves location and installation,
instead of adopting common rule-of-thumb techniques. Future work will improve the
description of the impact scenario and the pipeline response to the load. In particular, a
structural-reliability based analysis with Mathcad will be utilized for evaluating the failure
probability given the impact
Oil & Gas
Perform a Risk Assessment of Pipeline Protection (Dropped Object Study) which is a risk-based approach for assessing
pipeline protection against accidental external loads like dropped crane loads on offshore risers, pipelines and umbilicals
BUSINESS INITIATIVE
RESULTS
SOLUTION
We have chosen Mathcad due to ease of use, self-explaining, intuitive application and full capability of
developing the integral/differential equations for the probabilistic assessment; moreover the Mathcad worksheet
is easily managed by every HSED Engineer.
What you see is what you getthis is what we needed and what we gotMathcad!
