Words are important

Train instead of Treat. (Only the licensed fields treat, biofeedback signals train/retrain responses.) Programs in place of Therapies. (Some States interpret therapy as referring only to standard medical, psychological or other licensed therapies, and those in the certified fields avoid the use of this word.) Client instead of Patient. (Only the licensed fields see patients.) Educate instead of Prescribe. Because lifestyle changes are a personal choice, clients make their own decisions based on education

Stress
A stress focused practice is liberation. It is not a limitation. Stress is a major element in the development of ill health.

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

Stress Defined
The term "stress" was first used by the endocrinologist Hans Selye in the 1930s to identify physiological responses in laboratory animals. He later broadened and popularized the concept to include the perceptions and responses of humans trying to adapt to the challenges of everyday life. In Selye's terminology, "stress" refers to the reaction of the organism, and "stressor" to the perceived threat.

Healthy Stress
Stress in certain circumstances may be experienced positively. Eustress, for example, can be an adaptive response prompting the activation of internal resources to meet challenges and achieve goals. SO>> Stress can be healthy or unhealthy

Self Regulatory Response Healthy and Unhealthy Stress

Organisms have self regulatory responses
Move towards nutrients (stress managing supports) Move away from toxins (stressors that disrupt self regulation)

Healthy Stressors sustain homeostatis Unhealthy stressors sustain homeostasis

We react to any stress

Stress is 1. Perceived by an organism 2. Evaluated for response action (e.g. re-activity response in SCIO/ resonance) 3. Discriminated into an action a. A healthy/ life sustaining/positive response response:
i. ii. e.g. to love e.g. to a nutrient e.g. a loud noise>> move away etc. e.g. activate a system response (e.g. imune system)

b.

A negative response to a disturbing stress

Healthy & Unhealthy Stress WHY is this important?

The organism has healthy stress patternssignals/communications that sustain homeostatis> that make processes work properly There are defined electromagnetic signals that correspond to healthy functioning and organs> they are measurable (electrical measurements of heat and brain wave patterns, measured frequencies of organs) Healthy stressors always create a response> a sustaining one that support homeostasis
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 12

Healthy & Unhealthy Stress WHY is this important?

Unhealthy stressors always create a response> a debilitating one that takes us away from homeostasis This shows electromagnetically
e.g. in an electrocardiogram/ brain wave measurements

Similarly more subtle cell/organ signals become altered by unhealthy stressors

Healthy and Unhealthy patterns

Frequencies and Stress

IF We know healthy signatures/patterns (e.g. frequencies) AND We can measure disturbances (distortions to the stress pattern) AND We can restore the correct pattern THEN We have a way of rebalancing a distorted stress pattern

Healthy tissue: constructive Interference:

Ideal, harmonious in phase vibration of regularly arranged atoms maximizes energy (Itzhak Bentov)

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

18

Unhealthy Tissue
There is a chaotic vibration due to different accumulated particles such as free radicals, heavy metals, viruses, bacteria, fungi, inflammatory debris, etc. This is causing an energy drain by interferences. The Main Focus (main degenerating area) is the most chaotic area and is at the core of draining the entire bodys energy.

Rebalancing stress distorted patterns

There are various possibilities including 1. Offer a complete balancing pattern back> reinforce the positive stress pattern response. This can overwrite the faulty pattern (like a long restorative holiday)> requires a resonant coupling (it must be the right style of holiday) 2. Reduce the disruptive effect of the stressor by cancelling/removing its signature (IF there is enough cell vitality and inter cell support) > a short holiday away from the stressors can be enough (and of course reduce/eliminate subsequent exposure)

Acute and Chronic Stress

Stress is your body's reaction to the constant demands of the world Stressors are events or conditions in your surroundings which may trigger stress. Two main types of stress that people are faced with are:
Acute (immediate) Chronic (low level/subtle and often ongoing)
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 24

Acute stress
Also known as the fight-or-flight response, is your body's immediate reaction to a threat, challenge or scare. The acute stress response is immediate, it is intense, and in certain circumstances, it can be thrilling. Examples of stressors that may cause an acute stress response are a job interview, a fender bender or an exhilarating ski run.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 25

Chronic stress- THE WORST

Results from long-term exposure to acute stress. The chronic stress response is much more subtle than the acute stress response, but the effects may be longer lasting and more problematic.

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

26

Daily Life Chronic stressors

The stressors which may lead to chronic stress are the nagging, day-to-day life situations that often seem unrelenting. Think> relationship problems, work difficulties and financial woes.

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

27

Tangible Chronic stressors

The stressors which may lead to chronic stress are the nagging, day-to-day toxic stressors that create an unhealthy response (foods, chemicals, electro pollution) Unhealthy stress creates a load and moves the organism away from healthy living processes: it debilitates. The debilitation process shows in an electromagnetic disturbance at the heart of lifethe cells (more later on this)

SO STRESS IS

VERY BROAD ALL YOU NEED TO REFER TO PROVIDED YOU EXPLAIN IT WELL (see IMUNE Stress 101) (IMUNE Biofeedback 101)
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 29

Stress- irrelevant?
Why does anyone want to work with disease when they can work with a major underpinning to health! The US National Institute of Health (NIH) and the American Medical Association (AMA) both rate stress as the most common cause of all disease. They are not alone! Worldwide Associations (Psychological, Heat, Diabetes etc. rate stress as a major factor in most disease. >>>> Google Stress and verify.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 30

Deeper Effects from prolonged stress

Excessive, prolonged stress may contribute to a wide range of other mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Stress may also contribute to physical health problems such as: stomach and duodenal ulcers, high blood pressure, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid over-activity, ulcerative colitis, and persistent skin damage from scratching.

Neuro-chemistry and Physiology

The neurochemistry of the general adaptation syndrome is now believed to be well understood, although much remains to be discovered about how this system interacts with others in the brain and elsewhere in the body. The body reacts to stress first by releasing the catecholamine hormones, epinephrine and norepinephrine, and the glucocorticoid hormones, cortisol and cortisone.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 32

Neuro-chemistry and Physiology

The hypothalamus- pituitary -adrenal axis (HPA) is a major part of the neuron-endocrine system, involving the interactions of the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands. The HPA axis is believed to play a primary role in the bodys reactions to stress by balancing hormone releases from the adrenalineproducing adrenal medulla, and from the corticosteroids-producing adrenal cortex.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 33

Acute>>Chronic
The HPA etc. is not designed to be under continual load> the very common drip-dripdrip of the stress tap. It will be reduced in response activity- like a dripping tap eats away a stone. Instead of protecting you, your body's response to stress, if constantly activated, may make you more vulnerable to lifethreatening health problems.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 34

Other Systems Affected

The release of chemicals from stress reactions affect>
Nervous system Neuro-endocrine system Oxidative Stress Digestive system Liver and pancreas Immune system Cardiovascular system

Stress worsens many skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, hives and acne and can trigger asthma attacks

35

It is a total load issue

. The human body developed defence mechanisms to deal with the threat of predators and aggressors. Modern life is full of new threats. Your body's well-adapted defences against physical dangers may not be as effective at dealing with the stress you feel while:
LIFESTYLE examples-managing a huge workload, making ends meet, taking care of an ill parent or child. PHYSICAL examples-being exposed to chemical, reacting foods, elecropollution etc.

Biofeedback

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

37

Biofeedback Definitions
According to FDA 21CFR 882.5050, a biofeedback device is an instrument that provides a visual or auditory signal corresponding to the status of one or more of a clients physiological parameters (e.g., brain alpha wave activity, muscle activity, skin temperature, etc.) so that the client can control voluntarily these physiological parameters.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 38

Biofeedback Definitions
Biofeedback Certification Institute of America, biofeedback refers to providing information (feedback) for biological activity. Biofeedback is a group of procedures for learning control over physiological responses with the help of electronic instruments and the services of a certified biofeedback professional Biofeedback is a complementary approach often used with other therapeutic procedures to enhance health in general ways, for example, to achieve deep muscle relaxation to counter stress reactions; or in specific ways, for example, to strengthen muscles in order to treat incontinence.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 39

Conventional Biofeedback
Biofeedback operates on the belief that it is possible to learn to control ones brain states from within. Biofeedback trains the brain to modulate its level of activity, to become more or less activated according to the needs of the individual. A reaction of stress typically involves brain overactivation. Through biofeedback, individuals can learn to teach their brain to quiet down; to become less activated.

Conventional Biofeedback
Conventional Biofeedback uses the conscious mind to re-train/rebalance into correct homeostatic activities that are normally autonomous- that normally operate independently of our conscious mind.

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

42

Biofeedback- the Process

Biofeedback is used in our daily life to monitor and correct
(like the sensation (imbalance) of thirst stimulates us to take the rebalancing action of drinking )

Biofeedback connects clients with what is going on inside their bodies. It first creates an awareness of imbalances Often when this happens the body automatically begins to readjust (if there is good vitality/communication)
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 43

Conventional Biofeedback- the Process

Sometimes- and especially in poor health/ excessive stress) we need more help: 1. Deliberately create an awarenessconventional biofeedback 2. Retain using deliberate actions the inner process

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

44

Conventional Biofeedback- the Process

This seems a very deliberate/active process to access deeper disturbed stress response processes- e.g. temperature control gone wrong. Making deliberate actions for inner change often requires 10-30 conventional biofeedback sessions. WHY? It seems hard to change the deeper/automatic process by deliberate action
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 45

Advanced Biofeedback
?? Can we go more closely to the heart of the disturbance?? Hypnosis is an example of accessing the deeper information (just an example- advanced biofeedback is NOT hypnosis) The stress disturbance is reflected in electromagnetic disturbances AND Clinical evidence indicates that direct retraining of imbalanced stress response patterns to correct ones provides: 1. A healthier and more resilient stress response 2. A more well person!
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 46

SCIO Biofeedback
The SCIO tunes an individual into his or her bodys physiological stress levels so that this information can be used to learn to relax and control their own physiology, and consequently affect a decrease in those stress levels, resulting in improved physical and emotional health.
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 47

Assessing Stress
If we know the imbalance- if it is obviousthen we can choose a stress reduction/rebalancing approach (e.g. I am tired so I know I need to sleep) Often the stressors and their effects are quite subtle- we arent aware of them- so we dont know what to do. We need to do a subtle test
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 48

Assessing Stress
We could physically expose a client to all stresses and see what happens!!!!! OR We could test against the signature of possible stressors and look for the response

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

49

Subtly & Gently Assessing Stress

Is this valid YES e.g. Prof Cyril Smith (Salford Univ, UK) showed the same style of response as direct exposure to an allergen:
Sealed allergen in a glass tube The frequency of the allergen from an electronic resonator
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 50

SCIO Biofeedback- Evoked Potential

An Evoked Potential is a recording of electrical activity from the brain, spinal nerves or sensory receptors in response to specific external stimulation. Evoked Potentials evaluate the functioning of neuroanatomical pathways in the brain, brainstem and spinal cord without using invasive devices or needles.

Measuring stress response

The following methods have been used
Galvanic Skin Response (skin resistance) Muscle Tension (EMG) Brain activity (EEG) Heart Activity (EKG, HRV) Arterial pulse (VAS or PAT) Skin Temperature

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

52

SCIO Biofeedback
The accuracy of reactance (response to active issues) has been measured and found to be accurate to perhaps 7580% levels. But never accurate enough for us to make full claims for people who react to these compounds. Outside electrical interference, patient adaptation to the signals, and other aberrations prevent us from getting extremely accurate data Thus we do not claim that reactions patterns are diagnosticpre-diagnostic at best.. Further test results and more classic mechanisms are needed to VAILIDATE/CORROBORATE
Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008 53

SCIO Biofeedback
The re-activity response is a fast test (1/100the sec) so is a possibility The a high re-activity response can come from anywhere in the clients field
Current issue (transient or ongoing) Was an issue and no longer is Isnt an issue right now but dont want it to be Is something in my thought field from another person/event

A reactivity response just says maybe significant> it DOES NOT say good or bad,

FDA Registration Information

The sole purpose of the EPFX system is to provide the patient with insight into the subtle changes in the temperature, skin resistance (sweat), and muscle voltage. No claims are made by the Eclosion Corporation for the ability of biofeedback to treat any medical condition. Even claims for stress reduction are not without critics or criticism.

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

57

FDA Registration Information

What we do claim is that the system measures subtle body electric and thermal changes in the patient and feeds them back to the patient via audio or video signals. These signals give the patient awareness of the electrical and thermal changes and thus allows them to better relax. Relaxation shows lower stress? When relaxed natural processes work better?

Copyright Dr John Kelsey IMUNE Aug 2008

58

Claims
Inappropriate claims have exacerbated the situation with the deviceClaims outside of the original EPFX indications for use, by a therapist are inappropriate and need to be responded to. THERE IS ACTUALLY NO NEED TO GO BEYOND STRESS AS STRESS IS SO STRONGLY RECOGNISED AS SUCH A HIGH CAUSAL FACTOR TO UN-WELLNESS

What you should now do

Each practitioner needs to do their own write up to explain the process and benefits of stress treatment using biofeedback >>that they can comfortably explain to clients when asked. It should be TOTALLY stress related- use the key words on the early slide (not diseases, treatment, diagnosis etc.) Use IMUNE Clinical Practice 101 to help with terms.
