The Study Of Mumbai Metro

INTRODUCTION Mumbai Metro project the construction of which was started in February 2008. The project comprises of construction of three metro lines. A consortium led by Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group's Reliance Energy Ltd (REL) along with Veolia Transport Co. and with Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) secured the contract of Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor.

The main objective of the Mumbai Metro is to provide mass transit services to people within a distance of 1 to 2 kms, and to serve the areas not connected by the existing Suburban Rail network. Focuses on the development of an environmentally friendly system to become Asia's first Green Metro right from the construction stage.

We conducted a survey among the residents and the shopkeepers living in the western suburbs and labourers working on the project, who are directly affected by the construction of the metro rail.

ABOUT THE PROJECT


In June 2006, the Prime Minister of India, Dr. ManMohan Singh, laid the first stone for the first phase of the Mumbai Metro project, which comprises a three-line highcapacity metro railway system spanning 63 kilometres. Phase I of the metro project includes construction of three metro lines. Project is led by Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group's Reliance Energy Ltd along with Veolia Transport Co. and with Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) secured the contract for the 2,356 crore Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor. Simplex Infrastructures Ltd is carrying out construction.

Phase I (20062016)

Versova - Andheri Ghatkopar - 11.07 km (Construction started by Simplex Infrastractures Ltd., expected to be complete by 2012)

Dahisar (E) - Charkop - Bandra - Mankhurd - 39.2 km.

Phase II (20122017)

Colaba - Bandra - Airport - 30 km Carnac Bunder-Wadala-Ghatkopar-Mulund-Teen Haath Naka - 40 km

Phase III ( 20162021)

Airport - Kanjur Marg - 9.5 km


Andheri(E) - Dahisar(E) - 18 km

Total Length 148.8 km

For the company:The company should have better project management that would include time management, cost management, utility, inconvenience caused to masses.

From the point of view of labor: The company should provide better hygiene facilities available at proximity to the work locations . They should also provide temporary houses to the workforce. The labor should also be paid wages adhering to the market standards or even higher than what the government would provide, Reliance ADAG being a private company.

Recommendation to government: Strict adherence to rules. Removal of bureaucracy. Proper accountability and transparency to be enforced towards the government by the company. Better co-ordination between authorities like MMRDA, Reliance, government, etc.
