ATL/NUT Strike action th June Thursday 30

What does it all mean for me?

Do I have to strike?
You do not have to, but you are encouraged to support your union which has voted to strike. No-one can force you to strike Impact of dissatisfaction will only be felt if as many teachers as possible take action. Turnout on ballot even though overall low is higher than e.g. EU elections, London Mayoral elections... Not a dispute with school, but the Government

No obligation to tell head or manager whether you intend to strike or not BUT numbers needed (even if not names) to assess viability of closing school Please inform your rep whether you intend to strike

Picket lines
persuade non-strikers of the rightness of the cause No point if school is closed! If school is to remain open, then we will issue further guidance on picketing...

More strike action?

Discontinuous action = there could be further action in the autumn without the need for a further ballot Lets see how effective this summers strike is first... Lots of other public service workers also striking on the same day U-Turn City?

Loss of pay/pension for strike action

You will lose 1 days pay
FT 1/365th of your gross annual salary PT (pro rata) = the equivalent of one days pay
e.g. 0.8 contract = 4 days a week = 1 day not worked a week 52 days not worked (52 weeks in a year) 365 52 = 313 I will lose 1/313th of my salary and the equivalent pension contribution 18,600 / 313 = 59.42

Pension loss will be equivalent to 1 days contribution

at FT close to retirement rates, this amounts to approx 2 per year much less for others Striking does not bring a break in continuous service for pension purposes. To break the service, seven consecutive days break are needed.

Work? Strike?
Any daily loss to your salary / pension by striking is outweighed by the greater loss of long term pension reform going ahead unchallenged with far greater losses in the future for many more thousands of teachers. You cannot be dismissed for taking strike action.
