WHAT WAS the 2G SPECTRUM SCAM?

2G licenses issued to private telecom players at throwaway prices in 2008 at prices decided in 2001. Spectrum scam has apparently cost the government Rs. 1.76 lakh crore.

POLITICIANS....
Andimuthu Raja:
Responsible for the largest political corruption in modern Indian history, amounting to a record $39 billion loss from underpricing to the Government of India. The alleged modus operandi was telecom bandwidth being grossly undervalued and offered to a chosen few with vested interests, on a dubious 'First-Come-First-Served' basis. It is alleged that it should have been put under a transparent auction system, purportedly advised by higher office.

A.RAJA.
The Comptroller and Auditor General holds Raja personally responsible for the sale of 2G spectrum at 2001 rates in 2008. In August 2010, evidence was submitted by CAG showing that Raja had personally signed and approved amajority of the questionable allocations. In 2011, investigation by retired judge Shivraj Patil found Raja to have been directly responsible for "procedural lapses" regarding the spectrum scandal. Raja claimed he was following policy guidelines that had been put in place by the earlier BJP led NDA government and that he was adhering to the laws of the land. Raja and two former associates were arrested on February 2, 2011. Raja is currently in Tihar Jail.

M.K.Kanimozhi
She is the daughter of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi. In November 2010 Outlook published transcripts of six conversations between lobbyist Niira Radia and Kanimozhi from May 2009. India Today claims that these conversations reveal that Kanimozhi filtered the information flowing to her father. She thereby "tipped the scales in favour of" A. Raja, during controversial 2G wireless spectrum allocations in 2008.

LOBBYIST NIIRA RADIA

The Indian Income Tax department tapped Radias phone lines for 300 days. The CBI reports that they are examining Radias 5,851 phone calls and 82,665 pages of documents. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Radia for more than eight hours on the 24th of November 2010.
