This movement was first truly twentieth century style and part of the movement called Modernism. It started in Paris, France, but quickly spread to England and America, thus becoming internationally popular. Although Art Deco appeared at a time of rapid change, it was adaptable enough to reflect the changes.

Arts of the Aztec and Mexico.

(Geometric forms are simplified to become more dynamic and free-flowing)

Bright colours and strong designs of the Russian ballet, which included Arabian and Eastern costumes were included.

Jazz culture of America. Theatres and Musicals supplied dancing figures which became the subject of small statuettes. Hollywood Glamour led to the popular use of gold, silver, plastic and chrome.

The following forms were frequently used:

Geometric fan motives Chevron Patterns

Zig Zag Patterns

Egyptian Columns

Star Bursts Sunbeams

Lightening Bolts

Use of materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, lacquer, inlaid wood and sharkskin was popular. Therefore metallic hues of gold, platinum, silver and bronze is very popular. The colours used are bold, bright and colourful.

Extravagant and luxurious, as a reaction against the difficult times experienced in World War 1.

As in the case of Art Nouveau, the scares and rare materials were initially used, but later were copied and produced in greater quantities and more cheaply so that the general public could afford them.

WILLIAM VAN ALEN

New York would keep the tallest building in the world until 1974, when the Sears Tower was built in Chicago. For Walter P. Chrysler, from the car manufacturer, building the tallest building in the world was a status symbol. The Chrysler building is one of the last skyscrapers in the Art Deco style. The gargoyles depict Chrysler car ornaments and the spire is modeled on a radiator grille. The building's Art Deco interior is even more magnificent than its exterior. The marble floors and many Art Deco patterns such as on the stylish elevator doors make the Chrysler Building one of New York's most beautiful office towers.

Bright colour red and blue Stylized motors. Three dimensional block-letters. The catastrophe of WW1 caused designers to look into the future and forget the past. They depicted their love for life and the rapid pace of the modern lifestyle. Speed was the latest sensation. It was a sign of modernity (newly mass produced products of the time) and was incorporated into the design. Wealth and glamour was emphasized. The spiral arrangement of the road is dynamic. The headlights of the motors, that shine diagonally, further emphasize the dynamics.
