MODIFICATION OF STRATEGIES IN TEACHING SCIENCE FOR PUPILS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES

EVALUATION

INTRODUCTION
Evaluation means to find out, decide the amount or value of something.

-Oxford Dictionary

Students with disabilities often fare much better when given opportunities to present what they know rather than responding to a paper-and pencil test. Learning disabilities (LD) students should be allowed flexibility in the mode of examination.

MULTIPLE-CHOICE SELECTION IN EVALUATION

Give extra time for completion Three/two choices instead of four or five Place them in a small or quieter room Visual difficulties read the question to them, use large font Language difficulties provide an auditory tape of the question processing difficulties an opportunity to dictate answer rather than write essays.

GUIDE FOR TEACHERS

Identify students prior knowledge. use small group or peer tutoring to review. Use games format reviews. Provide study guide or concepts maps to help direct study. Using graphics or pictorials to help illustrate the problems

Examples of modification strategies in teaching science

ACTIVITY : CARD SORT Given cards with statements or pictures on them. Students use the information on the cards to sort the cards into different groups. HOW CAN CARD SORTS HELP WITH EVALUATION? As a group activity they can discuss and identify the correct area

ACTIVITY : CARTOON STRIP SEQUENCE

A series of cartoon-style pictures that show a sequence of events. Purpose explore the students ideas about the sequence of events in a scientific process

HOW CAN CARTOON STRIP HELP WITH EVALUATION? Reviewing the sequences that the student produce and making a judgement about the accuracy of the ideas

ACTIVITY : GAMES

Games may involve the use of dice, counters, boards, cards, models. Students involve a scoring system, a race to see who finishes first or whole group collective activity with a common purpose.

HOW CAN GAMES HELP WITH EVALUATION? It will be evident where the student get confused or stuck, where they cant complete their turn or they ask for help
