A system software which controls the hardware. The programs that make the hardware useable. Interface between hardware and user. Interacting with the user and application software. The set of programs that controls a computer.

OPERATING SYSTEM


OS is software, consisting of programs and data, that runs on computers and manages computer hardware resources.

OPERATING SOFTWARE


OS performs the following functions: Displays the on screen elements with which user interact. (user intrerface) Loads program into the computers memory so that you can use them. Coordinates how programs work with the computers hardware and other software. Manages the way information is stored on and retrieved from disks.

Four major types of operating system. Real time OS. Single-User/Single-Tasking OS. Single-User/Multitasking OS. Multi-User/Multitasking OS.
