Cutting

By Robert, Laurentius, Glenny, Vincentius

Cutting

 Cutting is a technique for vegetative(asexually)

propagating plants in which a piece of the source plant
containing at least one stem cell is placed in a suitable
medium such as moist soil.
 Cutting is also known as striking/cloning.

 Plant striking is a simple process by in which a

small amount of the parent plant is removed.
Types of Cutting

 Stem Cutting

 Leaf Cutting

 Root Cutting
Stem Cutting

 Stem cutting is the plant propagation by removing

a part of the stem and dip it in the soil
 It is usually used to produce houseplants, such as
Bougainville, rose. Others : sugarcane, African
violet.
Process of Stem Cutting
Process

1. Choosing the stem:

 Stem contains free of insects
 Each cutting should be 2 to 4 inches long and have 2 or 3
leaves attached

2. Make a cut 1/4 inch below a leaf node and pull off the leaves
that are at the nodes that will be below the surface of the
rooting medium.
3. Gives rooting hormones (usually honey) to stimulate the
rooting. (optional)
4. Dip the stem into the soil.
5. Keep the humidity high and place it in an area with indirect
light.
Leaf Cutting

 Leaf cutting is a plant propagation by using a leaf

blade to produce a new plant.
 It is usually used to propagate African Violet,
Begonia, succulent plants.
Process

1. Choosing the leaf:

 Healthy leaf from a vigorous plant

2. Cut the leaf close to stem with sharp knife. Insert

the leaf into the soil so that 1/3 of the leaf is below
the surface.

3. With leaf cuttings, the original is usually not a part

of the new plant
Leaf Cutting
Root Cutting

 Root Cutting is a plant propagation by taking the

root and dip it into soil.
 The plants : lemon, tamarind,
Process

1. Choosing the roots:

 ¼ or ½ in diameter
 Collected from the chosen plant not from
neighboring plants

2. Cut straight through the end of the root closest to

the stem. Cut the other end on a slant.

3. Place cuttings horizontally a half inch below the

surface of soil.
