Natural Gas Pipe Sizing

Copyright 2005 by Jack Rise HVAC Technical Training

Procedure:
Find the longest run from the gas meter to the farthest appliance. Use linear feet. Add up the Btuh input of all appliances connected to this gas line. Enter the table at the longest run column and dont get out of it again. Size all piping using this column (mains, branches, etc.).

Longest run = 8 + 15 + 10 + 3 + 3 + 46 + 2 = 87 Linear Feet

3

Total Btuh input of all appliances = 100 + 50 + 35 + 45 + 60 = 290,000 Btuh

4

Longest run = 87

Pipe size = 1

Total input = 290 MBH

290 150 = 140,000 Btuh

6

Pipe size = 1

140 MBH

140 35 = 105,000 Btuh input

8

Pipe size = 1

105 MBH

105 45 = 60,000 Btuh input

10

Pipe size =

60 MBH

11

Boiler and Hot Water Heater branch line = 150,000 Btuh

12

Pipe size = 1

150 MBH

13

Hot Water Boiler branch line = 100,000 Btuh

14

Pipe size = 1

100 MBH

15

Hot Water Heater branch line = 50,000 Btuh

16

Pipe size =

50 MBH

17

Clothes drier branch line = 35,000 Btuh

18

Pipe size =

35 MBH

19

Range/Oven branch line = 45,000 Btuh

20

Pipe size =

45 MBH

21
