System of Special Teams 1. HALO UNITS - In English, the term commando means a specific kind of individual soldier or military unit. In contemporary usage, commando usually means elite light infantry and/or special operation forces, units. In the militaries of most countries, commandos are distinctive in that they specialize in assault. 2. Have goals (expectations) for each game. 3. Flexibility/Multiplicity a. Have more than one of doing things. Commando's " improvise, adapt, overcome." b. Communication amongst special teams players/coaches. What's working out there? c. Have a direction, clear goal for each unit each week. Mental Toughness 1. Play well enough to win or you don't. 2. Same standard of play anytime/anywhere! 3. Haul ASS to the ball every time no matter what happens. 4. Expect and create turnovers by aggressive play. 5. Sideline players. ("know what's going on") work the game! Don't watch it! 6. You never know which play determines the outcome.
Punt Team
Objective Give the defense good field position, less than 8 yards per return. Force a fair catch, a fumble and recover it. STRIP, STRIP, STRIP the ball at every opportunity! Punter- hang time is critical. Punt team. When the opportunity arises to down the ball inside the 10 yard line, hustle and make the play no matter what! Specialist Punter: 1. Can get the punt off in 1.9 to 2.1 seconds. 2. Gets more height than distance (4.3 seconds hang time). 3. Consistently places the ball on or inside the 10 yard line. 4. kicks best under pressure inside his own 20 yard line. Center: 1. An explosive accurate snap every time (.8 to .9 seconds). 2. Able to block an assigned area or man in either direction. (Spread Punt). Team speed is necessary to get to the ball carrier. From Line Players: 1. Block until ball is punted. 2. Release - get off hold up & get to landmarks. 3. Cover spread the field (never follow the same color!). 4. Come to balance and gang tackle the ball carrier. Outside Hit men: (spread) 1. Release off LOS against Jammers (1 or 2 men). 2. Out run Jammers after release. 3. Sure deadly tacklers on the ball carrier. 4. Good judgment of balls inside 10 yard line keeping ball from going into the end zone. 5 Strip, Strip, Strip the ball at every opportunity.
Punt Team
Personnel The most dependable trustworthy players on the team who can block, release, cover and TACKLE. Guards/Tackles: LB s,RB s, TE s, and SS s. Wings: LB s, RB s, DB s & WR s. Personal Protector: RB s, LB s, DB s, WR s & QB s. Hit men or Ends: WR s, & DB s. Fake Objective Get the first down or score a touchdown. Fake Specialist Personal Protector and punter that can run or pass. Team Alert to when and why to use this weapon. All assignments must be carried out for it to be successful.
Return Objective Give the Offense good field position. To return each punt a minimum of 12 yards. Net 28 yards per punt. Return Specialists Fearless, quick and shifty punt returner who have sure hands, who can make tacklers miss and able use of their blockers to find the open field. Team Fast open field blockers who can block man (lock on) or zone (wall) using good judgment not to illegally block. Also always alert for the fake. Jammers: must be able to hold up man on the LOS and block him in space. Block Objective To block the punt, giving us a touchdown or good field position. Block Specialist Explosive, Aggressive and have a Knack and a desire for blocking punts. Team An all out effort by blockers who are intent on blocking the punt. Personnel Front Linemen: Quick Linemen, DB S, WR s, RB s & LB s Jammers: DB s and WR s.
Objective 1. to block the field goal giving us a touchdown or good field position. 2. To block the P.A.T, and put opponent in tough situation for later in the game. 3. Prevent any successful fake. Block Specialist Explosive, aggressive and have a knack and a desire for blocking kicks. (jumpers, swimmers, crashers and skinners.) Pressure inside and out. Team Some players assigned for fakes and the rest assigned to block the kick, Personnel Interior linemen : DL, OL, & big LB s. Jumpers, swimmers, crashers and skinners: DB s, WR s Cover men: DB s P.A.T Blocks THE TRUE TEST OF THE INTENSITY OF A FOOTBALL TEAM!
Game Day
Pre-game warm up Snappers, kickers, holders, and returners out 1hour 15 minutes before kickoff Game Time: Area on sideline where teams gather on 3rd down . (reminders) Trainers report all injuries to teams coach first. Starters and back-ups know each other Only Teams Coach , Head Coach or trainer can pull a player out of the game. Kickers and Snappers stay warmed up during game Every player on sideline works the game Enjoy the game HAVE FUN! DON T SING IT! BRING IT!
