Introduction :

PASSIVE SOLAR DESIGN

y Aim to maintain interior thermal comfort.
1. Cooling load y Is one partpredominant inbuilding design of green Mumbai . 2. Savings of 23% of annual loads can be achieved by optimising building design only.

y The scientific basis for passiv e solar building design

has been developed from a combination of climatology, thermodynamics (particularly heat transfer), and human thermal comfort.

Direct Gain Systems

y South facing windows thus form the basis for the

simplest type of solar heating system. Sunlight incident on transparent surfaces allows the energy to enter the living space directly and is called Direct Gain.

Site Plan:
Don t shade the south, except for overhangs, but do shade the east and west sides. Decks, porches and carports also may be used to shade.

TROMBE WALLS
y Vents provided to external walls at the top and bottom at that can drive warm air out in the summer and bring cooler air

Operation of Trombe Wall

y Sunlight hits the darkened mass wall and absorbed heat moves slowly across the wall y The inside surface temperature peaks 6-8 hours after the midday outside surface peak y Operational vents allow optional controlled air circulation into the space during the day y Overhang reduces wall sun exposure during the warmer months

sunspaces
y A sunspace is a room glass panels which is designed to

collect sunlight and heat. y Having a sunspace can cut down substantially on heating bills, and it can also make a house more enjoyable to live in

Winter Night The shutters to the sunspace are closed tight Winter Day keeping all heat within the confines of the collecting radiation and distributes it into the main living area house through the dividing wall. carried to the top of the house from where it is redistributed via fan.

Blinds protect the sun spaces from solar gain while ventilation to the North and South facades and internal walls provided cross ventilation. Shutters may be manually operated as the Thursday, June 09, 2011 passive heatingsolar architectural building... requirements dictate.

Sunspaces .

Orientation of building ..
1. If possible, the longer axis of the building, should be oriented east/west. Early Spanish designs were usually long rectangular buildings, situated so their longer walls faced toward the south to absorb the heat from the low winter sun. In the summer, when the sun was higher in the sky, long porches helped to shade the buildings and keep them cooler. 2.

ROOF GARDENING
I. This is an effective concept making the slab or roof cool, which is the hottest part in building. In our building we people use this concept effectively to reduce the heat gain by slab.

Solar chimney ..
1. The chimney has to be higher than the roof level 2. Heating of the air 3. . Openings of the vents in the chimney should be against the direction of the prevailing wind. 4. maximizing the cooling effect, through underground ducts before it is allowed to enter the building.

Government of India Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources

y To encourage these organizations for constructing

their new buildings on the basis of solar design principles, the Ministry provides the following partial financial assistance:
(a) Preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) 50% of the cost of DPR of a building designed with the help of solar building design principles or 1.5% of the estimated cost of the building with a maximum of Rs.50,000 for each project. (b) Construction of Solar Buildings Limited to 10% of the cost of the building with a maximum of Rs. 10,00,000 for each project.

FUTURE FORECASTING WITH PRESENT SCENARIO

y Incorporating passive solar techniques in a building

(small, medium or larged scale) design could be used to minimize load on conventional systems (heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting) ..which will prove as boon for reducing the energy requirement in city country etc.. Thus helping in development of

the nations

Conclusion.
1. Buildings, as they are designed and used today, contribute to serious environmental problems because of excessive consumption of energy (Average mall -Rs. 25 lakh/ month Multistoreyed office -Rs. 15 lakh/ month ) 1. Awareness & implementation of new concepts through the architecture students, practicing architects, building designers and scientists, engineers, urban planners,, municipal authorities, policy makers, and concerned citizens will create a better place to live in ..
