V Devices that use light to store and read data have been the

backbone of data storage for nearly two decades.

V It started from CD·s which can store 700MB and has moderate
speed.

V Then came DVD which can store up to 17 GB and has speed up

to 10 Mbps.

V Recently in 2006 ,BLU-RAY disc was launched which has capacity

up to 54 GB and speed of 36 Mbps.

V But looking to the future we need to go ahead and find a better

way of storing data, a easier way which is far more better in
speed as well as memory.

V In to achieve this scientist have proposed a new technology

which uses 3-D layers instead of conventional 2-D. This technology
is named ½ ½

V To understand clearly the concept of a holographic
disc let us have a brief study of the data storage
devices which are being used widely today :

V CD

V DVD

V BLU-RAY
¦ Thescience of producing holograms, an
advanced form of photography that allows an
image to be recorded in three dimension.

¦ Holographic memory is a technique that can

store information at high density inside crystals or
photopolymers.
V Holographic memory will go beneath the surface and use the
volume of the recording medium for storage, instead of only
the surface area.

V It can store about 1 terabyte (1000 gb) and which has speed
about 60 times greater than normal DVDs.

V HDS technology also offers the potential for a 50-year archival

lifetime without the expensive environmentally controlled
storage required for magnetic tape. Also, the volume of
physical space required for archiving data would be reduced
substantially.

V HDS could be an enabling technology for high-performance,

three-dimensional imaging applications, as well as large image
databases, such as those required for satellite imagery and for
biometric identification
V Data Transfer Rate:1Gbps.
V Technology permits over 10 kilobits of data to be
written and read in parallel with in a single flash.
V CD saves one bit per pulse whereas HVD stores
60,000 bits per pulse in the same place.
V 1 HVD=5800 CDs=830 DVD=160 Blue Ray
V
: it can store up to 1 terabyte (i.e. 1000GB)

V ½½
Allows a million bits of data to be written and read
in parallel with single flash of light. So it has transfer rate greater
than 50 Mbps.

V It has high definition clarity which is even more

greater than blu-ray discs.

V
½ Because of its unique ability to store
data through out the depth of the media,it helps to reduce
piracy.

V ½ ½ : Thus helps in films and game distribution.

V ½

Its random access and data matching
abilities help in places like ATM and face recognition systems at
airports.

V Manufacturing cost HDSS is very high and there
is a lack of availability of resources which are
needed to produce HDSS.
V Holograms appear dimmer because their
patterns must share the material's finite dynamic
range.
V Writes in the same fashion can degrade
previous writes in the same region of the
medium.
V rasable Write-once, Read-many drives
ðsupports Terabytes of storage,1 GBit/second
read-out and access of data in blocks.
V Write-once 3D disk: accessing time is only 10-
100msec.
V Pre-recorded 3D disks: supports more than 100
Gbytes per 120 mm and readout rates are
greater than 200 Mbits/sec.
V The future of HOLOGRAPHIC DATA STORAG SYSYM
is very promising.
V The page access of data that HDSS creates will
provide a window into next generation computing
by adding another dimension to stored data.
V Can achieve higher amount of memory storage.
V Can achieve higher data transfer rates so as to
reduce the access time.
V This technology has revolutionalized the storage
media.
