Prevention 101

Dr. Renee Ridzon

Global AIDS Investments are
Working
• Rapid scale-up of HIV treatment is an unprecedented
achievement
− 5 million people are receiving treatment today
− a 12-fold increase in just 6 years
• We have begun to reverse long-term increases in HIV
infections
– proving that prevention efforts can have a major impact

The Challenge

Pace of new infections:

• New HIV infections outpace efforts to
provide treatment
• For every 2 people who gain access to
treatment, 5 people become newly
infected

The Challenge

• Fewer than 1 in 5 people at greatest

risk of infection have access to effective
prevention programs.
• New HIV infections could be reduced if
interventions reached those at greatest
risk infection

•Three randomized trials have shown that male circumcision
reduces the risk of heterosexually acquired HIV infection in men by
approximately 60%
Treatment for prevention:
Clinical trial among serodiscordant couples in seven African
countries found that antiretroviral treatment reduced HIV
transmission up to 92%
