This Presentation

1. To share with you our thoughts on current and future

trends in the lighting market

2. To explore the commercial and technical opportunities

presented by CFL and LED technologies

3. To discuss how we might usefully collaborate to seize

these opportunities

3
Light – The Benefits

24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks per year

4
Light – The Cost
Artificial lighting allows the construction of increasingly
space-efficient buildings
We are no longer governed by the availability and
constraints of natural light

5
Saving Potential

If all European light sources were changed to existing

energy efficient technologies it would produce:

The Future - Lamps

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) to grow ~20% per annum

• From 1.2 billion units in 2005 to 3 billion units in 2010 globally
• Value and profit opportunity will result

Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology is developing rapidly

• Already 80 lumens per watt (3-4 times the efficacy of Halogen)
• Cost is currently high but is continuously being driven down
• Forecast to grow by around 500% over the next 5 years
• Market expansion €150m in 2006 to €750m in 2011
( LED device only)

15
Key Points

• Environmental concerns, cost issues and legislation all require us to

utilise energy more effectively
• Old inefficient lighting technologies are being phased out and
replaced by more efficient and sustainable alternatives
• CFL is the growth lamp technology right now
• LED is developing quickly and represents the future
• Fixture technology is continuously improving with
•more efficient optics
•electronic drivers
•control systems
Putting more of the light produced,
in the right place at the right time

LEDs will dominate commercial

lighting by 2020

17
LED Features and Benefits
Features Benefits
Long lifetime 50,000 Hours to 70% Lumen Maintenance
Energy efficiency 80Lm/W
Inherently rugged LED is a non fragile construction
No warm-up required Instantaneous light
Directionality Minimal system losses
No Mercury or Lead Environmentally sound
Infinitely dimmable Lighting effects and power saving
Colour saturation Infinite colour palette
Instant cold starting Loves cold temperatures

...BUT… LEDs are currently disadvantaged by COST
