Media Production

Guidance
Consider your content
To maximise the use of filming/studio time, it is important to consider what
you’re presenting and the most suitable type of video for your content.
Examples include:

Content Production type

Demonstration, e.g. lab techniques Studio/remote filming using
mobile/DIY Film School
equipment
Explanation of a concept or topic, Argyle House studio using
e.g. How does a food system work? learning glass
Traditional lecture On-campus lecture recording

How-to guidance videos
You can find useful information about making video content on the

Media Hopper Studio channel

This channel features a series of guidance videos, which demonstrate how to:
 Write, review and edit scripts
 Present online learning videos
 Film on a mobile device
 Set up lighting for videos

If you filming remotely, at home or elsewhere, the videos about using a mobile
device and setting up lighting are particularly useful.
Writing a script
If you are using a script for your video, it is essential that you write, edit and
rehearse it before your studio session.
Using a script ensures that you cover key points in a structured, clear way, it
keeps your focus on the topic, and maintains learner interest.
Writing and practising a script also ensures that your presentation to camera is
professional and engaging.

Creating a storyboard
You should produce a storyboard to plan the visuals for your video. A storyboard
represents what should be on screen at any given time and will help the media production
team to edit your video appropriately.
This will ensure efficient use of filming time and effective use of media production team
input. Review the example slides 7, 8 and 9. Use the template slides (10-13) to create your
storyboard (duplicate slides as needed):

Support and coaching
One of the benefits of booking a studio slot to produce video content is the
support of a media production team.

Media producers will run the filming session. They will provide coaching to get
you feeling comfortable on camera and for presenting in the most engaging way.
You will have time to practise using a teleprompter and do multiple takes of your
script.

Your video will go through a post-production process that will give you a
professional, standalone teaching resource that can be reused in different contexts.

You can find useful information about copyright and open educational resources
on the University's OER website.

So, what do we mean by the term ‘ethics’? Well, ethics is a particular
branch of Philosophy – Moral Philosophy – which concerns itself with
what is right and wrong and how we should act. Ethics are the codified
process that helps us determine what is right or wrong.  They are the
rules that define our moral conduct – in fact the word ‘ethics’ comes
from the Greek word ‘Ethos’, which means habit or custom.
